IMO jones was one of the best to ever do it and at 168 he was just incredible. RJJ by late KO or wide UD

I'm with miles. I'm not convinced. Toney was over rated and hopkins was before his prime. Jones was great but in all honesty, so is Calzaghe. Frank Warren reckons Jones kept pricing himself out of a fight with Calzaghe. I think they would both hit the deck at some point in this fight. Would be very entertaining anyway.

With Joe's workrate, this fight would be exciting.... until about the 6th round when Roy would step back, measure Calzaghe, and then close about 10 feet of distance in a flash to throw a hook into Calzaghe so hard his entrails would go flying out of the ring.
Bottom line...Joe C couldn't hang with Toney ay SMW, and Roy made Toney look very average.
The fact that there's people on this board than honestly believe Joe C could beat RJJ at SMW makes me believe that said people have never seen either of them fight.
Ive seen all of them fight, believe me....Originally Posted by Brockton Bomber
I just dont think you have seen all that much of all of these fighters.
Actually, I've seen all of them fight extensively...a little less of Joe C, but I did see the Lacy fight. Are we talking about now, or prime for prime? Because now that Jones can't take a shot, it's a lot different story.
So you have seen the Lacy fight? Well that is the sign of a guy that studies the fighters he is talking about. During this thread I have only been talking best against best. I do have a feeling by your lack of any real knowledge of Calzaghe you are merely making assumptions though...Originally Posted by Brockton Bomber
HYPE, AND THATS EXACTLY WHAT JOE. HAS NOW TOO HYPE.Originally Posted by DaxxKahn
even lacys power was hype just cause he had a kind of tyson look. :P
The majority on this site were supporting Lacy back then. They crawl away dismiss Lacy and reinvent under new forms...Originally Posted by BoxingGod
yes alot of people were miles i thought it would be closer aswell but people realize that lacy isnt as good as people made out thats why calzaghe victory doesnt mean much now lacy vs that vitali guy lacy only just scrapped by and vitali is not the elite by any means calzaghe has lived off that win too long and should have been fighting kessler hell even clinton woods would of been good opponent but no he is facing manfredo .. need i say more i am calzaghe fan miles but he has been letting me as fan down lately dont i cant even defend him with his latest choicesOriginally Posted by miles
Roy knocks him out... Much lesser men have downed Calzaghe, and Roy is too fast, too strong, and too good for the Brit.
He's only had a fight since Lacy, Ice, and yes Manfredo will be crap next. But that is not why Im arguing what I am in this thread. Im judging this on Calzaghe fights from over the years. Skill wise Calzaghe is up there. As simple as. On a theoretical level I think a Calzaghe: Jones fight goes either way.Originally Posted by ICE COLD BOXING
Im not defending Calzaghes oppositional record since Lacy here.
skill wise i disagree with miles calzaghe has good workrate and good speed but footwork and movement and defense meaning in avoiding punches and even jones speed and power calzaghe really and truthfully doesnt come close to jones in that department this is how i see itOriginally Posted by miles
power= jones
speed=jones
chin=calzaghe
footwork= jones
workrate=calzaghe
defense= jones
I dont know what peoples be smoking..But toney was the nuts at middle and super mid...

Honestly i think it would of been a much bigger fight for calzaghe than Jones; jones would of been p4p No1 at the time, calzaghe was still an unknown in the us at the time... You seen how calzaghe came into the lacy fight, Jones would of been much much bigger for him.Originally Posted by THE Bigragu
I agree with pretty much evetything Miles has said on this, i don't think jones would of stopped calzaghe, i know he has had 2 silly knock downs - but so have a lot of great fighters. Being a southpaw could also cause jones some problems, i know he can switch stances but it can still be tricky.
If this was such an easy fight for Jones, he would of taken it long ago - doubt even jones would say calzaghe would be easy for him.
Yes, Jones Jr did hold advantages and these would have played a part. But a focussed Calzaghe is as good an opponent as Jones Jr would have faced. A weight drained Toney, or a Hopkins who was yet to mature, do not match up to what Calzaghe would bring. Calzaghe may very well lose a decsion but he would steal some rounds in there and depending on how rough he could make it for Jones this would decide the fights closeness.Originally Posted by ICE COLD BOXING
