I remember reading in a boxing manual which advised to lean forward when running. I found out myself that this causes shin splints.
Besides that I don't have shin splints unless I have a month lay-off from running or if I'm doing too much. A good pair of shoes help, I wear a rugged pair of newbalance and the soles don't wear in like other shoes would after the time put. A warm up and good old wind sprints keep the run from being monotonous.
