A fighter that's well prepared and trusts in their abilities. Or summed up in one word, "Confidence."
That about covers heart. That better defines it more than, "ability to absorb loads of punishment"; although they sometimes go hand in hand.

Snatching a win from the jaws of defeat.
Heart-imo,coming through adversity successfully. Adversity which would defeat someone without heart. The willingness of a fighter to make tremendous sacrifice during a bout to win whether it be fighting through pain(ie broken hands) or ability to absorb large amounts of punishment and still win OR put up a good showing. Merely getting beaten up does not constitute heart all the time imo..
Good thread though,so going by our definitions, did Zab show heart v Cotto?
even though zab pounded his fist against his chest trying to imply that he had heart..i felt he didn't show any heart..he just got beat up...and was looking for the ref to give him the DQ...he should have gotten mad and beat cotto up if he felt like mercante was letting him get fouled...Originally Posted by El Gamo
now had he overcome the blood, the fouls, and cotto's heart, and fought to the end, then win or lose it would have been heart..but to get the victory makes it better...

I think if a guy is taking punishment that is more heart than if a guy is taking punishment but dishing it out also. To take a beating and still hang in there is incredible if the fight looks out of reach. At that point a good referee should help the fighter out.Originally Posted by JonesJrMayweather

Maybe it is stupid, but if a fighter just quits people call him a quitter and it ruins his reputation. They hang in there because there is probably hope in their hearts that the opponent who is dishing out the beating will get tired and a punch will land which in turn wins them the fight.Originally Posted by JonesJrMayweather

heart is something hard to figure out. You have guys like Duran who seem to have heart but if you look at his career whenever he took a beating he kept on taking a beating. I think a guy who has heart is a guy like Corrales or Gatti. Guys who were taking beatings and summoned up courage and came back to win. Anyone can be a bully and win a fight by overpowering like Duran did, yet then be overwhelmed by the good fighters and make excuses after. But to be losing and get the energy to land punches when it all looks like it is over is heart.Originally Posted by Scrap
