He does have some weight from letting himself go and he said it won't be too easy, but he's still really strong (he can pick me up with one arm lol)

Hi everyone,
My boyfriend used to box back in high school (before I knew him). He did pretty well but for various reasons he stopped. Now, years later, he wants to get back into it... only this time professionally. He's got himself a promoter and a date for his first fight and everything...

Now I love him and will support him no matter what he does. I'll be there to cheer him on, congratulate him when he wins, and console him when he loses. But... I'm scared. I don't want him to get hurt. I have been reading too much about boxers getting brain injuries, and I'm really worried for him. It's his dream, and I won't stand in his way, but I don't like it too much. What can I do? Is there some kind of support group for significant others?

Well first things first you had better stop him from driving because he is more likely to die in the car on the way to the fight than he is in the ring.

And by the way don't let him play squash as there are more fatalities in that sport than any other

Boxing requires a different kind of strength. You can be able to lift heaps easily but punch like S***. It all comes with practice and technique. Good luck to your bf and dont worry as long as his corner looks after him then he will be fine

I think he should be ok there... he said that back when he was doing it as an amateur, he was usually the one who hit harder, including the time when he got to fight a world champion. Of course it's been years since he's been in the ring, but I'm sure he'll catch up

steady_E: I never once said I was going to stop him or get in the way of his dreams. It's his life and he will do what he wants... but I am always allowed to be worried for him. I'm not so worried that he's going to die... it's the possibility of a brain injury that bothers me.
