It takes skill don't get me wrong but i think its still there on the boarder.

Darts is one that comes to mind, always hovering on the sport/not sport boarder. Anyone can pick up a set of arrows and hit a few 100's the occasional 180, doesnt make you Phil Taylor. Not the most energetic of sports but then again neither are some of the events you see at the olympics, pistol shooting for fucks sake?
So by that logic competitive eating is a sport? That can hold true for most things but with some of the things people are trying to pass off as sports today, there's gotta be a more specific requirement than there simply being a measureable level of success in said event.

When some one says "he's a great athlete" but they don't tell you what he does right away, what sport(s) do you associate him with? Golf? No. Skateboarding? No. They both have measureable levels of skill and success as well as a degree of athleticism (just look at charles barkleys golf swing, how his back is still in one peice amazes me) required to do them but they aren't full blown sports. Shooting a gun takes just about as much skill as golfing or those other things. You have to calm your nerves to the point where you can hold it steady and most of the time you have a very small target to hit. I don't exactly consider hunting a sport either. They are borderline hobby/sport and the argument could be made one way or the other.

I gotta disagree about shooting/golf analogy...Granted I'm in the Army but I can shoot pretty well and I work with a number of guys that can put a 5 round shot group inside a quarter at 300 meters with iron sights.....but I'm pretty damn worthless with a golf club

I saw it live in a local bar. Couldn't believe it. My first words to the guy next to me were, "that kids' never gonna walk again."

About 5 years ago I was in a bar in San Diego watching skateboard/surfing clips (because all sportds have ended at 10pm western time) and I saw a kid hit his head that almost made me throw up. And that shit doesn't get to me. He was lucky he did split his head like a coconut.

Lyle, I hear you, but partly disagree. I think people don't see it as a sport because of the way it's marketed... plus you have the kids skating in public places, ruining shit, etc. But I skated many moons ago... shit, 20 years ago...and I have to say, these guys are athletes in every sense of the word. It takes massive hours of practicing, countless injuries, etc. To be able to do what they do is just as impressive...more impressive even...than most other sports on TV.

Von I do think skating takes a lot of talent though....but you can be talented at a hobby just as you can be talented at a sport

Oh Big Dan I'm just so crushed you disapprove.

You know no one held a gun to that guy's head an MADE him do that....does anyone ever ask these guys "What happens if you mess up?" I am sure they either have no answer or their answer is something like "It'll be bad".

America is a land of choices and I am of the opinion that flying down a ramp to jump up as high as possible with only a helmet, kneepads, and a skateboard was a bad choice.....and perhaps that dude thought the same thing as he was laying in his hospital bed with a bruised lung and bruised liver.

You try something stupid Dan and you just might get a stupid result....hence the "hahahaha"....you act as if this is something no one does when they see that sort of crap....ever heard of a show called 'Scarred' or 'Caught On Tape'.....people make money off of these near death experiences and they don't deserve to, they were stupid to do those things to begin with.

So Lyle, by the same logic, a boxer is "stupid" for putting himself in the situation to ride a wheelchair or something like that their whole lives? I wouldn't think you would call boxers who end up hurt stupid. If you do then fair play.

But my whole thing is, when did the term "sport" become a label of exclusivity. The definition of sport should never go into specifics. When it does, then it becomes ugly. And there is really no reason for it to become ugly because there is no reason to deny something the title of sport even if it really is.

Merriam - Websters definition of a sport is "(1): physical activity engaged in for pleasure (2): a particular activity (as an athletic game) so engaged in"

Now...if you don't think that skateboarding adheres to that then I don't know where your mind is. Basically a physical competition. Golf is a sport. Darts are a sport. Competitive eating is a sport. And so is skateboarding.

They all have different degrees of difficulty but they are all sports nonetheless.

If you don't see it that way, then I'll do some nitpicking at the definition of my own. How bout this.

Any sport that is in any way decided by a judge is not a sport at all. For it to be a sport, the competitor should be able to win it himself without interference from a 3rd party.

So that excludes skateboarding, figure skating, diving and oh....boxing. And that is just as viable of a reason to exclude something from the title of "sport" as any.
