But my whole thing is, when did the term "sport" become a label of exclusivity. The definition of sport should never go into specifics. When it does, then it becomes ugly. And there is really no reason for it to become ugly because there is no reason to deny something the title of sport even if it really is.

Merriam - Websters definition of a sport is "(1): physical activity engaged in for pleasure (2): a particular activity (as an athletic game) so engaged in"

Now...if you don't think that skateboarding adheres to that then I don't know where your mind is. Basically a physical competition. Golf is a sport. Darts are a sport. Competitive eating is a sport. And so is skateboarding.

They all have different degrees of difficulty but they are all sports nonetheless.

If you don't see it that way, then I'll do some nitpicking at the definition of my own. How bout this.

Any sport that is in any way decided by a judge is not a sport at all. For it to be a sport, the competitor should be able to win it himself without interference from a 3rd party.

So that excludes skateboarding, figure skating, diving and oh....boxing. And that is just as viable of a reason to exclude something from the title of "sport" as any.
Good post Amat, although I still struggle with any definition of sport that encompasses curling. I know it's all the Canadians are good at but it's really not a sport, it's one simple movement, just slide a puck down an ice rink, a sport needs more to it than that.

Why is yoitsdan flipping everyone off? As far as something being hard I think that is silly logic to determine a sport. Childbirth may be hard or trimming hedges may take skill......but that doest qualify them as sports.....
I think golf and table tennis are both sports though.

Just because somebody can do something better than somebody else doesn't mean that its automatically a sport. Here's a clarification:

Anything that has a tangible aspect of defense and offense is a sport. Anything that can be done by ones self involving tricks or just simply displays of skill is a hobby. Now a hobby could be classified as a sport under the term of ____ competition. Skateboarding is not a sport however skateboarding competitions are. Eating a lot of food isn't a sport how ever doing it for time or amount in "competitions" (not matter how biased i am in thinking this is an absolute joke) i suppose does qualify as a sport.

How can you say speed eating is not a sport

Watch Kobayashi in action, here he's taking on an Alaskan brown bear!!

And I ask you would Michael Buffer attach his name to something that was less than credible? I think not.

I could dig up a royal rumble (probably several) that suggests yes. Now my mom's husband is watching nascar. The only thing in the world more annoying than watching nascar is hearing it from another room.

If everyone's gonna hold this belief that skateboarding, competitive eating, and even golfing are on the same level as boxing, baseball, football, and basketball, than thats what the definition of a sport has to be and no event (no matter how ponderous) could be excluded from having sport status if its done in a competitive manner. This includes: Video games, Poker, yoyoing, eating, rock climbing, stamp collecting, and any other hobby done in a competitive manner.

Well I guess the fact the they are purely mental rather than physical tests of skill disqualifies them from sports status but I wish chess was on British tv.

If you understand the strategies involved and the key concepts like positional play and control of the center of the board, getting your knights to important outposts etc it can be a fascinating game to watch.

Thats how it has to be. Either only activites that have tangible offense and defense in a competitive enviroment is a sport or EVERYTHING in a competitive environment is a sport. You can't do this kinda in the middle shit where skateboarding isn't but golf is. Either they both are or they both aren't (i'd say no to both).

Bullshit, stamp collecting is not physical. Everything has to have defense? Then that eliminates golf, shooting, track and field and stuff like that. Things that are clearly sports. The term sport shouldn't be something that you value.

This all stems from your dislike of a sport. It's ok if you don't like a sport or even don't respect it, but that doesn't mean that it is a sport.

Then explain what makes a sport and what doesn't. Draw the line between hobby and sport.

When a competitive element is present an an organised structure of competition is introduced with official governing bodies and a codified series of rules and regulations.
