This all stems from your dislike of a sport. It's ok if you don't like a sport or even don't respect it, but that doesn't mean that it is a sport.
Then explain what makes a sport and what doesn't. Draw the line between hobby and sport.
When a competitive element is present an an organised structure of competition is introduced with official governing bodies and a
codified series of rules and regulations.
(Not a word but i'll go along with this)
By that definition poker and competitive video gaming as well as eating is a sport. They have all those aspects.
Yes but I don't have a problem with that. Anything that people choose to compete against each other competitively is a sport in my opinion.
Yes I agree that I associate sports with a physical element and so things such as chess may not be sports in the strictest sense but I still appreciate the skill required to take part competitively and so consider it to be as worthy a pursuit as any other sport.
People should just do what they love to do, one mans' meat is another man's poison.
I'm not saying they don't take skill. I have never said that over the course of this thread. Hobby's take skill as well as sports and i believe there is a profound differences between the two (sport and hobby). If you accept everything competitve as a sport, i can't argue that (on the terms that you indeed accept EVERYTHING competitive as a sport). I feel skateboarding is a hobby thats been passed off as a sport just as poker and the spelling bee have been in the past several years.
Yes but surely kicking a football or hit a ball with a bat started as hobbies and recreational pasttimes?
There has to come a point where the level of competition and infrastructure involved in organising events and tournaments marks a transition from hobby to sport.
I would say all sports start as a hobby but growth and development sees them become sports over time.
Skateboarding certainly started as a hobby but it's most definitely a sport now.
