Clinching is a tool in boxing, and most true boxing finatics don't expect a casual fan like yourself to take to it all that well - rightfully so. I personally see the brilliance of it and yeah there was a time when Wlad didn't do it at all but he does now and it wins him fights over guys like Byrd and Peter.
Trust me, I am far from a casual fan but based on what you just said, I can tell you who is. LOL
