McCallum was class and you are right the way he took apart Watson's body in the first few rounds made Watson breath hard and surely made him think Benn was easy but this is world class.

McCallum was not renowned for his one punch KO power and that punch against Curry was a one off. Saw him bat terr Milton McCory which was brutal, solid chin and took the bombs of Julian Jackson and his body punching was sickening for the opponents that had to take them. Excellent jab, in fact excellent technical fighter, almost flawless.

People may disagree, especially from the US but I thought he won the first two fights with James Toney.
I think you could be right there Roy Jones Jr did respect McCallum a lot. I think they both respected each other i remember McCallum saying that Jones was even better than the fab 4. Maybe Jones did carry McCallum a little bit ?? but i still think McCallum's style just troubled Jones although Jones won easy, he had a few problems early on until he adjusted round about the 7th round.

I remember the report on the fight in boxing monthly, titled 'Loved up'

    Jones carried the bodysnatcher.

McCallums KO of Donald Curry was amazing, it was that good Lou Duva got a cut eye
When God said to the both of us "Which one of you wants to be Sugar Ray?" I guess I didnt raise my hand fast enough

You think he could of stopped McCallum if he hadn't shown as much respect Memphis ??

Yea he dropped him right at the end of the round in the 10th round i think it was, he was also landing huge shots in the 12th, i think he just respected McCallum so he carried him, just like Sugar Ray Robinson did with Henry Armstrong.

This may have been discussed already, but did anyone else think that McCallum looked very unconditioned in that fight, as if he was resigned to defeat so he didn't train his hardest?

Jones said after "why take a crazy chance with someone I can outspeed and outbox"....Cant argue that. The boo's did not seem to bother him and once he dropped McCallum at end of round 10 he seemed to try for a KO In the last two rounds. The judging was crazy, they had 6 total Lol,3 from WBC & 3 from Flordia commission.

Mike McCallum best days were behind him, he retired after the next fight against Toney. He put on one last brilliant performance in beating Harding at light heavy, but that was not his best weight but he still performed outstandingly well.

I think he was going to get a shot at the top guys but he lost to Sumbu Kalambay that is what killed him was that lose and his big fights. Sugar Ray Leonard, Tommy Hearns, Roberto Duran and Marvin Hagler would of been great fights for Mike McCallum i agree with Ice i think he losses to Leonard and Hagler but the others are a toss up.
