I think he was going to get a shot at the top guys but he lost to Sumbu Kalambay that is what killed him was that lose and his big fights. Sugar Ray Leonard, Tommy Hearns, Roberto Duran and Marvin Hagler would of been great fights for Mike McCallum i agree with Ice i think he losses to Leonard and Hagler but the others are a toss up.

And McCallum was 39 as well, McCallum truly is an underrated great fighter.

The body snatcher was a tough tough guy...In 50+ fights he was never Ko'd and only lost to the top guys...With the exception of Kalambay those losses also came past his best days...I was always a fan of McCallum...His 2 rds with Julian Jackson was a classic...Jackson was undefeated and the most feared puncher under 160 at the time...I think he had at the time they met a record of 29 or 30 and 0 with 27 or 28 kos under his belt and McCallum KO'd him in the second.....Mike was a very good fighter even in his later years only bested by the elite of the time

No way did McCallum push Jones at all... JOnes wasn't even going hard out of respect for Mike, and he still won virtually every round, McCallum didn't like anything except to the body, but those didn't compare to the quick counters of Jones.

You are wrong again (like with Lewis beating Tyson). Hagler was retired by the time he lost to Kalambay, SRL was manufacturing big fights, Duran would not have come near him at Middleweight and Hearns was only interested in revenge against SRL. McCallum would have beaten them at that stage as they were passed their peak, only Hearns could have mounted a real challenge.

I didn't say he pushed him hard i said he gave Jones a competitive fight for the first 6 rounds, it was pretty close after 6 rounds and McCallum was landing a good jab to the body and landing some good shots when Jones was on the ropes, but once Jones circled in a different direction round about the 7th round it was all Jones, i do think Jones did carry McCallum somewhat because he respected McCallum a lot and vice a versa.

Even when Roy was one the ropes which he has always done a lot, McCallum landed body shots, but a lot of them were taken off Jones' elbows and McCallum just looked slow in that fight not that it isn't expected at 38-39, but I still believe that Roy didn't really leave first gear in the fight.
