Boxing Sucks.

Donny you bring up some good points, and I totally agree with your notion that boxing fans should give boxing a try. It definatly would give them a new respect for boxers. I remember being a cocky 19 year old walking into the gym, confident that I would be great because I was big and watched a lot of boxing, and being totally shocked at how much just a JAB or a body shot hurt.

HOWEVER, I don't agree with the notion that boxers are not open for criticism from the average man. What it all comes down to in sports is that the athletes get judged based on their peer group, not compared to the average Joe. For example, if we saw a world champion boxer quit in a title match, we would question his heart. Why? Most of us would crap our pants walking to the ring, let alone fight a world class boxer. So why should we question the guy's heart?

We question it because he belongs to a distinguished peer group of world champs. He's in the same group as world champs before him, and therefore will get compared and judged according to the standards those past champs set. So if someone feels that a certain fighter is not living up to a particular standard that they feel a champion, a contender, or even a journey man should meet, than IMO that person has every right to voice it.

The word Bum is used far to often. How many guys deem a fighter a bum, yet have never fought themselves. Many critics have absolutley no idea of the physical and mental strain of being a boxer. Yet these armchair experts deem themselves qualified enough to disrespect fighters and offer their opinions on what a fighter should have done.

I can condone guys offering opinions and their viewpoint, but I loathe guys who make fun of or disrespect a fighter because he doesn't fall into their mould of perfection.

I was just asking you a simple question....most people seem to think the heavyweight division is crap, and if they are in here saying stuff like "We're too hard on professional fighters" then this sort of is against their stance on the heavyweight division.



....so I was just asking if you were one of those people or not. Not trying to make a big deal out of it, I just wanted to get some understanding as to your thought process.

Nobody has the right to call a professional fighter of any weight, who is dedicated to his trade a bum or denigrate his efforts.

Matt Skelton, he's a fighter who lacks in skill and finesse, does that mean he trys any less than the next fighter? No, it doesn't.

Let's say I'm a window cleaner. I clean windows every day and thats my trade. Do you think I would appreciate a fighter coming up to me and saying "actually it's better to do it this way" or "your a crap window cleaner"

We as fans have the right to slag off who we want when we want, sometimes for no good reason.

doesnt mean that we dont appreciate what they do and the risks they take.

If the fighter happened to be the one paying for your job (i.e. because he owned those windows), he'd have good reason for criticising. If the fans happen to pay the wages of fighters - albeit indirectly - then they should be allowed to criticise as well.

Of course there can be different ways of criticising - walking up to someone and telling them, they are crap are usually not the most constructive way, no matter who it's being said to.
