Am sorry for what had happened to your cousin. I believe that God has always a purpose behind things/events that happen or have happened to us.Honestly, I believe that all of us are SPECIAL in God's eyes.

I know that there are many road accidents that happen everyday. That's why I thank God for the protection He has given me. No offense meant Fenster.

From a catholic perspective, everyone is "special" enough for God to "give a shit".. even the most mortal sinners..

So, if you're part of a religion where you have to meet requirements for your 'god' to accept you, then i wouldn't know the answer to your question, as i don't know the requirements..

I was also raised as a Catholic, been into seminary and have thought of becoming a priest someday. I've decided to read the Bible, then I became a Christian.

So when somebody tells me that he is an atheist, I can empathize and understand him.

Yeah Point of view totally understood and respected man.
The fact that we hold different beliefs doesn't alter my opinion of you at all....Some peole let it cloud their opinions and I think thats silly, you're still the exact same person that you were five minutes ago in my eyes, the only difference is now I know a little more about you....You look at things logically, thats hardly a sin!

Fenster, I'm sorry man, but I think you're well out of order here.

To hold your own beliefs is perfectly acceptable, to feel that others beliefs are false is actually OK, but to disrespect anothers opinion and belief is both disrespectful and unfair.

The fact is, that behind the personalities that are presented on the computer screen in front of you, lie the lives of numerous other people, with their own lives, opinions and feelings.

I sympathise with your cousin's passing, I understand your situation all too well, but the people you insult by passing comment are no less "special" than your cousin so please respect them the way they in turn respect you and your loss.

    quite a journey eh?

let's just hope you don't stumble across the Satanic Bible and the Anarchist's Cookbook in the same day as we'll see you in prison for arson charges

Cheers Brucelee, I never expected a post of mine to inspire people to give thanks to God, unless I was announcing I was leaving of course!

But in all seriousness you are right we should be grateful. I agree with Fenster that not everybody believes in a personal God but still gratitude doesn't have to be directed at Jehovah or Alah or anybody else.

I personally do believe in the God of the Bible, and I believe he loves every single one of us.

I'm sorry to hear of your cousin's daughters' death Fenster, such events always appear tragic and sensless but as the quote that inspired this thread says, 'Life is difficult'.

Tragedy and heartbreak are sadly a natural part of this world, as natural as happiness and joy and part of the essential circle of life on this planet.

I believe that one day this will change in eternity and that justice will ultimately prevail, but for now we live in a world full of misery, hate, suffering and evil.

Surely that is reason enough then, to give thanks for our current situations, where we are not beset by war, famine, natural disasters or life threatening illness.

There will sadly be much heartbreak to come in all of our lives, it is a part of life, but right now I will rejoice with Bruce Lee, that my own health is good, I have friends and a family who love me, a state that supports me () and a forum full of interesting and beautiful people who inspire me.

I forgot to mention that I have also been into witchcraft and satanic things and thankfully no one had charged me for arson yet.

    well put donny..

to be honest i haven't really talked to people about religion in quite some time as it's obviously not a normal topic of discussion throughout my daily life.. but to hear someone, who is catholic/religious, say that they respect and understand someone else's belief is pretty damn big.. i mean from what i've seen in and out of church while i was catholic was a whole lot of ignorance and close mindedness.. again, not saying that this is how everyone acts, but just that it comes with the territory of defending your religion and beliefs.. so to hear/see someone say that they understand others beliefs is a sign of hope.. If everyone acted that way the world would be QUITE different.. so props to you guys, seriously.

Thanks, but I didn't know the girl, it's not something that I could pretend really affected me at all.

    No offence taken, Bruce.

I'm happy for people to believe in whatever they want, if it gives you some kind of understanding fine.. even if I believe it's nonsense that you believe in an imaginary being and believe somehow that imaginary being makes you important/better/special.

    No offence like.

    Well, Ok story time....
Although I'm Roman Catholic I don't really go by the church's expectations. I pray with the same prayers, I confess occasionally, I attend the church and I receive communion, but I'm hardly an exemplary Roman Catholic.

But in the past number of years, I've lost people I've been down, I've seen hard times and I've been hurt.
Friends have died, relatives have died, a hell of a lot of stuff has happened.

one night, I had just finished training and my phone was missing I really couldn't find it. I found my phone to find three missed calls from a friend who had been calling to meet me after training, he had been intending to give me a lift home and when I failed to answer he waited a while and when I din't ring he set off home. The next morning I woke to hear that he had crashed on the way home, the car had bee absolutley mutilated and the passenger seat was literally cut in two on impact, the car looked a disposed piece of tin foil. That would have been me If I could have found my phone and took the lift I had been hoping for.

Some may look at it as luck or a coincidence, but honestly I do thank god that I'm still alive.

I guess the main issue that surrounds this topic would be being "religious" vs being "spiritual..

Religion inclues ritual and tradition, so people may reject the term "religion"..to them it is better to be spiritual.. in their minds, religion requires church and all that goes with it, but being spiritual requires only a state of mind, which is defined and decided by the person, not an organization.

so being religious and being spiritual may be complimentary, because you can't really be religious without being spiritual.. but you could be spiritual without being religious, and back to what i was saying before, that is where someone who is very religious may consider you a "bad" person because you do'nt go to church every sunday.. well maybe i don't believe in religious traditions, but that wouldn't make me any less of a person.. unfortunately religious fanatics would tend to think so.

No, I just feel that it's ironic that you allude to people feeling "special" in a dissapproving manner, yet you adopt the condescending nature of someone who actually knows more than everybody else in your last few posts.

I would never belittle any of your beliefs.
If you're an atheist, I'm perfectly comfortable with that but I think no matter what creed or beliefs you hold you should practice a bit of respect.
