Out of interest pre fight, I was told just before he came to England McClellan had been badly KOd in sparring by Montell Griffin heard it from a very good sauce, makes you think.

The ref was a disgrace, no doubt, but in terms of letting Benn have extra time to get back into th ring, isn't there a rule stating that extra time is allowed if this happens?

Yes the "long count" How many times?

A fighter knocked out of the ring has 20 seconds to get back in under the WBC rules.

That wasnt the problem it was the ref pushing Gerald off of Benn for no reason when he got back in the ring..... not to mention Mclellan had Benn slumped on the 2nd rope with his hands down taking punches.. Last time I checked a fight was stopped when someone couldnt intelligently defend themselves.... Benns head was floating like a bobble head. Not to mention Benn was using his head like a Ram and rabbit punching ...

Bullshit black eye on Boxing, Gman is blind and slow because of corruptness and a cocksuker piece of shit ref who ruined both men they were both never the same he should rot in hell like the bastard he is

Yes this was a stinker by the ref , but the worst performance i can think of by a ref is
Isaac Carrera , Thomas Hearns v Dennis Andries , he was a disgrace especially in the 6 th round , were i think he wanted Andries dead .
    Just watched that here

Definitely the worsted I have seen, where was the towel from the corner?

Yeah the ref had a bad night. I was just confirming Big H's query about the extra-time allowed for a fighter knocked through the ropes.

Benn was stuck on the ropes, they prevented him from falling, the fact he got up to carry-on probably makes that one of the "good" decisions the ref made that night.. although understandably with hindsight MOST would much rather be blaming the ref for a premature stoppage

This was an epic enveloped In tragedy. It wrecked both,McClellan much more physically and mentally. The accumulative damage was telling and severe. The craziness with the 20 second count was intense, have seen it a few times with Rahman Vs. Z.Lawrence and Antwon Echols Vs.Brian Barbosa.I have literally lost some very good Friends/fans arguing on this one as Benn was basically cast as a villian...."He head butted,He had a long count,He celebrated rudely on ring post as Gerald layed in ring" etc.etc.Oddly at the time Any defense or pointing out Particular fight points....did feel abit unsettling.Simply...Courageous fighters, great men.

Benn did come across badly especially in the afterfight interview with the UK crew. The Showtime interview wasnt too bad.
But, we have to put it in context. I believe he was having a bad time with Frank Warren at the time and Mclellan was brought over with everyone (including his own promoter) expecting him to get a hiding. It was a brutal fight and Benn was literally fighting for his life in there. So I am prepared to give a little leeway to Benn for his conduct after the fight as it was the ultimate backs to the wall performance.

This is one of those Taboo topics in boxing...everyone likes to avoid it...EVERYONE!!! not just those involved that night....TBH it is because it scares the SHIT!!! out of every fighter manager and promoter in the business...Believe it or not this would have seemed less tragic if there was a death that night....Everyone knows it is just one punch that can put them in the same situation....Even Geralds best friends in the business that he was friends with before the accident avoid him...Roy Jones is the only fighter in the business to ever do anything for him...For a while he donated a portion of his purses to him....Other then that there were a few fundraisers for him because all his money was gone so fast in medical bills...Sad story all around...still breaks my heart to this day....

I seen this when it was on television for the first time and I actually cried because I was a big fan of Geralds...

Here is one that shows Nigel Benns feelings on what happened

That was Benn at his peak, he had that head movement, was relaxed, experienced and confident. He was the real deal for that fight, any other version would have lost against the G man. He was never the same after that fight, he had to be helped to get into the bath and pissing blood for a week.
