Whoa! Hopkins getting stopped? Didnt see that. I did see Hopkins cheaply try to get a breather, but getting stopped? lol.
As far as "How big was the win for the UK?" It was big for Joe, regardless of what the fight looked like. As for it being big for the UK, well, it's nowhere near anything Lennox did, but it's still a win over a legend, in his country.
If Lacy would have beat Joe, where would that rate for a U.S fighter? HMM............... Joe deserves credit, good for him.

Well you have to rate this as Calzaghe's biggest victory because, well he went to the states to do it. I'd say it goes like this. Not as legendary as Honneyghan but certainly it ranks up there as one of the greatest on paper even though I agree with those in the thread that think Joe didn't look all to spectacular.
Agreed.
Bhop showed why he is a great fighter, any guy who can score a very close loss to joe calzaghe at age 43 and has the talent to almost nullify joe right up until the last rounds shows his worth in boxing. Bhop beat winky and tarver aswell.
I cant see how it is better than lenox vs tyson or lenox holyfield though.
I think that lenox made the better wins in the us.
Honneyghan aswell.
But in the end it is what it is, hopefully joe calzaghe will fight pavlik in madison sq and it will be a real cracker of a fight and if joe wins that one then it might be ranked as the best uk win.
WHO CARES ABOUT UK VS US ANYWAY?
Theres never been a uk vs us rivalry, we are allies in war, we are long term allies and trade together, we have simmilar societies and mutual respect. Boxing isnt a battle of nations, it is a battle of 2 athletes against each other, its not the olympics where they represent each nation.
Aha...infact...the best gb victory over usa was when lenox lewis fought riddick boe in the olympics and won...because this was when two countries were being represented and going head to head![]()

Being a fan of both fighters (Hopkins first) I have to say...a win is a win is a win as long as it is legit.
Calzaghe won that fight...period. Close or not...he still won.
The fact of the matter is this : both men, IWHO, were exceptional fighters & between them both men were known for being awkward, technical, old school, fundamentally sound, cagey, unbeatable, throwbacks, & so on & so on...& in the end I saw both men take one another out of their respective zones & games.
The fight may have been ugly to some...but to those of you who watched it as fans...you should have gotten what you wanted.
Me...I was just glad to see the two finally meet.
Calzaghe's win over Hopkins was more impressive to me than Roy Jones's win over Hopkins because it came at a time when Hopkins was in the better of his game.
Jones fought a greener Hopkins & Calzaghe fought a late prime Hopkins still able to take men to task.
View it how you want...but it was an accomplishment for Joe.
One thing that always bothered me about Hopkins as a fan was the age factor & how he used it accordingly win, lose, or draw.
Never beg a 40 dollar hooker...specially after she's just turned down your mom's credit card!!
Calzaghe didn't win the fight, and compubox was out to lunch for the fight so I don't rate it as win for him. I think it was impressive what he was able to do against Hopkins despite that fact, but Hopkins landed way more clean punches and made Calzaghe look foolish quite a few times in that fight. I thought it was really close fight, but I think Hopkins distinctly beat Calzaghe.
