    Default Rock Allen

Anyone have the latest on this guy?

A couple years ago he was among the top prospects in boxing , what has he been doing? I think the last time I saw him was an HBO Latino card. He only had 2 fights in 07 and now hasn't had any this year or none on the schedule as far as boxrec knows.

He looked like a very good fighter who was very active and with a meanstreak. Now he is inactive and has taken soft opposition the distance twice in a row.

Anyone know if he's had any injuries or setbacks and why the inactivity?

OK, this is something I didn't know. Rock Allen is Naazim Richardson's son? I've never heard that before but it's the Philadelphia Daily News they wouldn't be wrong. It explains Richardson's health problems as the reason Rock and Tiger have been inactive. I've never seen Tiger professionally but Rock was a stud. Hopefully he can keep competing even without his dad in his corner all the time. This is a bit of a downer if this is the reason for continued inactivity.

Jul. 23--LAS VEGAS -- There was a reason Rock Allen, the junior welterweight prospect from North Philadelphia, was fighting for the first time in 9 1/2 months.

Allen -- who won a unanimous, six-round decision over Ramiro Rivera (4-5, 3 KOs) on the undercard of Saturday's Bernard Hopkins-Winky Wright pay-per-view show at the Mandalay Bay -- is trained by his father, Brother Naazim Richardson. Richardson suffered a stroke on March 29, was released from the hospital on May 5, and only recently returned to the gym to work with his son and the other fighters entrusted to his care.

Richardson had no choice but to accept a secondary role to newcomer Freddie Roach in Hopkins' corner for the main event, but he was not about to turn Rock (11-0, 7 KOs) over to an outsider during his absence.

The time off -- the lengthiest of Allen's career -- has blunted his career momentum, but Richardson said that's about to change.

"I keep telling Rock and my other fighters that boxing is not a sprint, it's a marathon," Richardson said. "I'm getting back in sync with them now. They were all working out while I was out, but they were still emotionally touched. We canceled a fight [for Allen] on the Oscar De La Hoya-Floyd Mayweather card because I was just being released from the hospital that day."

"I thank God I had my pop back with me in my corner," said Allen, who added that he "felt good" and was able to make "some little adjustments" during the bout.

Also on Saturday's undercard, junior welterweight contender Demetrius Hopkins (27-0-1, 11 KOs), Bernard Hopkins' nephew, starched Haider Berrio (11-3, 7 KOs) in one round, flooring him twice.

"I'm taking my time," said the younger Hopkins, who is ranked No. 2 by the IBF and trained by Derek "Bozy" Ennis. "I'm still young and still learning. When I fight for a world title, I'll be ready."

OK, so did a little more research and turns out he served as chief sparring partner to Hatton for the Mayweather bout which in a way is better then fight experience sometimes. Still, hope to see him in the ring sometime soon.

Jeez it has gotten slow all of a sudden here. It's midnight pacific time, and I'm watching this movie "The Mist". I'm in the middle of it right now. It's actually pretty good.

They both need more time no need to pit them against each other so early.

He looked great a few times (albeit against limited comp but what fighter under ten fights fights good comp?) and then I saw him once where he looked very very mediocre and I heard he had another sub par performance after that. I've lost track of him the last few times out.

Not sure what to think of him really. At first he seemed like this really explosive guy but I'm starting to wonder about his power, and I'm not sure he's a pure boxer type either. He definitely needs to fight at 140 or less.

Many commentators have noted that Allen has just not progressed on the tract that was expected and continues to fight like person just beginning their pro career.

Rock is signed with Golden Boy, so he could get the fights if they though he was ready.

Naazim has three sons (Rock, Tiger and Bear) as well as two nephews, Michael (Sharp) and Karl (Dynamite) Dargan and each one of them is or was a top flight amateur. Between the five of them they have won HUNDREDS of championships no doubt. Rock lost a very controversial (robbed many say) decision to Ricardo Williams in 1997 when he was a kid and Rick was considered the best junior in the USA. Rock also scored an amateur decision over future world champion Paulie Malignaggi.

I saw him on HBO:Latino also....

My 1st thoughts were he needed to tone his body down as he looked like a 140 lb. version of Holyfield. He fought well and I liked what I saw.
