    21 April

Forgot to take my glutamine on friday after training and after a hard football game on sat. i really felt it today and my body, especially my triceps were sore before I even started training today.

One heavybag and the double end bag were knackered. Hopefully fixed/replaced soon.

    4 rounds skipping

    2 rounds mitts

1st round doing a jab, right, hook straight, step jab straight, step, double jab, jab, straight , left and right uppercut , jab, straight right, double jab combo. Absolutely fucking unbelievably tiring doing this as a drill for 3 minutes.

    2nd round

Drilled a combo to keep an opponent in the corner. left, right, left and right uppercut, left and right hook, step and a one two combination.

two rounds on the mitts nearly killed me. Had a round to cool down a bit

    3 more rounds skipping

3 rounds shadow boxing. Fairly lazy as my coach was talking to me whilst shadow boxing

    6 rounds heavy bag.

    25th April

    7 rounds skipping

4 rounds mitts. Not so tiring today. Spent a lot of time refining my technique rather than constantly drilling the same combos.

    2 rounds shadow boxing

    6 rounds heavy bag

Did some strength work which I intend to try to do 2 times a week.

Pull Ups 2 sets 5 and 4 reps

Bench Press 3 sets of 10. Dont Know what weight it was cos its not marked on the machine.

    Dips. 2 sets of 5.

I was amazed at how weak I was. I used to do weights years ago and I was fairly strong then. But, I was fairly fatigued when I did the weights so I doubt I was anywhere near my optimum strength. Still, I will continue to do strength training at the end of the workout.

I think it is pretty awesome for you to be dedicating yourself to getting in good/great shape no matter your age. But find it more impressive considering your age. My dad is a retired NHL'er and I try to get his now lazy butt off the couch to join me in exercise but so far no luck!

I like reading these logs and might start one soon, and keep up the good work.

Thanks for the comments. After working on the mitts two of the coaches were talking about putting me in the shinjin (newcomer) amateur class at some point ,either welterweight or light welter, depending on what weight I can get to.

The problem is with sparring. There are no adults at my level, all the adults are basically pros and they spar together and take it seriously.
Any new adults that come usually quit after a month or two so I never get anyone to spar with, and I am too strong to spar with the younger kids. Although a new bloke has just joined who looks like he can handle himself and if he sticks it out I will try to spar with him. When I sparred with a pro last time I got a proper kicking and was covered in blood. Saying that the pro and the coach thought I did quite well.

But, I am determined to have a fight at some point, just to say i did it. If I fail to do it,it wont be for lack of trying. It would be for medical reasons or a lack of talent.

    9th May 08

had 2 weeks off due to the gym being closed for national holidays and me being a lazy bastard

    5 rounds skipping

    3 rounds sparing

    3 rounds heavy bag

5 rounds double end (The cord was really tight today, it was even hard doing a one two combination!)

SParring- Sparred with a different pro who took it quite light on me. He didnt land any hard shorts and was pretty much just hitting my gloves and pulling his punches when landing.

I only landed 3 good/hard shots. Two good hooks to the body and one good counter left hook to the head.

Plus Points- I felt prety good in the ring. My footwork and and upper body movement felt quite good. I was also a bit better at parrying/blockingg. Before I was jumping out of range too dramatically.

I could hear my coach and one of the pros who was watching talking about me when sparring and they were fairly complimentary and echoed the points above.

    Negative points-

Blow my fucking nose before sparring!! I found it hard to keep my gob shut and the coach and pro kept shouting at me to keep my mouth closed. I also have a crappy shock doctor gumshield which is far too bulky for my mouth. I will make an appointment with my dentist to get a fitted one and hopefully he will fiddle the price and put it on my national health!

Throw more punches and when I do throw do it in combinations.

I am finding it hard to land punches. Mainly I am still unable to work out my range and to close the distance when following up with my jab. But, one of the reasons I dont throw so many punches is that I am trying to look like I know what i am doing, rather than flailing away like a complete beginner.

One other problem is that if i cant see an opening I am reluctant to let my hands go. Hopefully the problems i have will smooth out with time and experience.

My coach wants me to spar with that guy more often and we are trying to get sparring with each other a couple of times a week if our schedules match.

I too have shock doctor and agree they feel bulky. Careful about what one you use, also. The one that has alot more plastic in it, I think are colored ones...has plastic running all the way down the side to the back of it....and that plastic tends to wear into your cheek tissue, and will cut you if you get caught right.

They have a cheaper blackish color one with less of that plastic. Cheaper to purchase, and better I believe for boxing.

Sounds like you might be fighting soon, eh?

Keep up the sparring and it'll come, don't be afraid to talk to the sparring partner and trainer beforehand to say what you want from it, for example if you want him to pull his punches or maybe tell him beforehand if you intend to go all out so he's prepared to defend himself without having to retaliate or knock you out, and be able to show you what you're donig wrong.

Yeah, it cuts my mouth quite often, the ridges on it are a bit sharp.

I got the more expensive one, but that was a mistake.

    Cheers.

The other pro seems to be a bit better fighting at my level, rather than giving me a kicking. I was amazed when I found out he was a pro, i always assumed he was the womens fitness instructor in the gym upstairs!!
