I understand there are a lot of Ricky Hatton fans on these boards but truth is Hatton is not that good of a fighter. His boxing ability is mediocre at best. It is his ability to keep a grueling pace and absorb a good deal of punishment that has brought Hatton to where he is. Ricky is the type of guy you want to avoid in a street fight but in a boxing ring he can be figured out by top notch boxers.

If Hatton faced any top level boxers of the past like Pernell Whitaker for example that could avoid his bull rush he would lose. He is not really a strong fighter, he uses quantity to break a man down. With his style being that of a guy who needs to be in the mix to win eventually the toll is taken. That is what we are seeing now. A fighter who has taken too much abuse in the ring and a fighter who does not make sure he is kept in top notch condition outside the ring.

There is no one to blame but Hatton himself. Billy has done a great job, Hatton has had great success but it can't go on forever.
I agree with pretty much everything here. Good post. I rate his ability slightly higher than you do, but yeh very good post,

I rate Hatton up there currently not to would make me look like a fool. The man has lost only to the best fighter in the business. I am trying to be honest about him though. I enjoy watching him fight I really do the guy is exciting.

My Father called him a poor mans Aaron Pryor a while back with the way he just keeps coming at you. It is just the shelf life of that style expires if there is not much else to go with it.

Yeh it's best to take him for what he is, and enjoy him while we can.

Agree with the people who say its too late to really make any big changes and that Hatton's a grown man, its up to him to live a healthier lifestyle.

    i second that

old dog, new tricks its all that sort of philosophy

Hatton re-altering his style now could have terrible consequences, he is a front foot aggressive fighter that has his own unique style of bossing his opponents.

Its worked for 44 of his 45 opponents therefore without question is succesful!!

They just need to work on defense more, he comes in straight up with his head in the air. Thats why he eats all those check hooks. Also, I am not a fan of his inside fighting, he holds with one hand and hits behind the head aot because he gets right into peoples chests, thats like UFC, not boxing. If he could just fine tune those things I would be a fan. He's fun to watch when he's not tying up.

That kinda technique all stemed from the tszyu fight and never really ever left him.

If you watch hatton against the likes of olivera, phillips etc you`ll see a guy who although still loved getting up close never really forced his opponent into tieing up or turning the fight into a scrap.

The team had the plan for kostya to tie him up whenever possible and in them situations look to manouvere yourself into a position to get your shots off, it worked a treat and has stuck with him ever since.

He briefly tried altering back to his old technique half way through the collazo fight and then reverted back once luis got the better of the trades!

Hatton hasn't used his boxing skills since the Kostya fight he used the hook and hold and smother tactics to beat Kostya and since the holding has just got worse and worse all he does now is hook hold push off hook hold push off hook hold.when he was younger he was a chunky meaty 140lbs now he is a gaunt ripped up 140lbs i think he should be 147lbs now

The average american will never rate a british man high, that's a fact. Hatton beats Tsyzu, suddenly he's washed up, Hatton beats Castillo, suddenly he's washed up. Calzaghe beats lacy, nah he was never anything special anyway. Calzaghe beats Kessler, nah he's over rated. Do you see the pattern immerging here? If Hatton would of beat Floyd, he would of suddenly become a 'washed up shot fighter'.

And I can only imagine there is more of that to come with the likes of Haye, Khan, etc..

Wow that's actually kind of a horrible blanket statement, bordering on racist.

No way should he change trainers at this point... It wouldnt be good for Hattons Pysche...

Whats the problem folks? Dont get it at all..

    1) His only loss is to this generations best fighter and arguablly gonna end up one of the best PFP's of all time

    2) He is the Universally recognized lineal 140lb champion for over 3 years

    3) Hatton is a 1st Ballot Hall of Famers

    4) Is far from an Arturo Gatti for fucks sake a fighter can be lucky to accompolish 50% of what Hatton has..

    5) Gatti was B fighter at best Hatton is A+ and always been.. If he called it a day tomorrow he would still have a tremendous legacy

I don't think he needs a new trainer. I thought he was doing things fine.If you noticed early on like the first 3 rounds he was throwing more combinations then the Mayweather fight.
