Calzaghe's now an HBO fighter also.
He'll be broadcast news in the boxing world from here on out as long as his career can stand the test of time. Joe made a mad dash offa ShowTime even though Warren was trying to cash in on that stable. From what I read a few years back...that caused a bit of tension...but who knows if that's 100% on the up & up, but I seriously doubt that it's been smooth sailing for Joe & Fwank the entire time.
In the end...I honestly have no complaints with Calzaghe fighting Jones...it's actually the fight I want to see.
While I was a massive Jones jr fan...after his back to back brutal knockouts at the hands of Tarver & Johnson...I can honestly say that I never wanted to see him in the ring again. I was pleasantly surprised by the outcome of his last two fights...but I doubt that it's a walk in the park for him against Joe.
That being said...I don't see the Pavlik fight as an easy win...but a win in the end all the same.
Kelly's a great kid & a hell of a fighter...but Calzaghe...Calzaghe is Calzaghe.

I disagree i think Calzaghe looked like a fighter on his way out against Hopkins, his jab wern't snappy and his combo's wern't as fast and they just didn't look like the same combo's that battered Lacy all around the ring, i think Calzaghe might actually be there for the taking against a young powerhouse like Pavlik, remember Hopkins hasn't been noted as a big puncher in quite some time, yet he manged to stun Calzaghe on numerous occasion's and even floored him with those straight right hands, then i come to thinking what if it was Pavlik hitting Calzaghe with those straight right hands how would Calzaghe cope with that ??

it would be a brutal KO if that happened..
I can only hope he fights Pavlik, but i don't see it happening.. The thing is, of course there is always the argument that "there is always another up and comer they could fight" but to be honest, if Calzaghe beats Jones and Pavlik, unless someone else very quickly rises to the top, i'd really feel that he fought the best guy possible..
lets face it, if Joe beats Pavlik, what will we be saying? He should fight Abraham, or Kessler has improved since they fought and he should fight Kessler.. no.. we'd know that Pavlik was the best guy out there, and as much as i want to see Calzaghe lose, i'd be content with his opposition..

Regardless of how bad Hop makes guys look, Calzaghe was much sloppier than usual in his last fight and I agree with you that father time is catching up with him. Which is why I don't want him to fight Pavlik since his chances of beating him diminshes with every passing month.
Regardless of what RP33 says, there will ALWAYS be another up and comer waiting in the wings, Pavlik was absloutley nowhere on Joe's radar even 10 months ago, now Abrham is making a name for himself, and what if Bute or Froch gets a big win under their belt? Whether the hype was warranted or not, the call was much higher at the time for joe to fight Lacy, and then Kessler than the call is presently to fight Pavlik (though all the joe doubters would LOVE him to take a fight to far).
A s for the Warren split, I can only imagine that he wants to cut out the middle man for one last fight, which is risky since Warren did offer work for Calzaghe after he retires. Whether Joe's career could have taken a different direction or not, I don't believe it was ALL Warren's doing that it took him so long to get noticed, and it does seem risky to burn a bridge with a guy you've had a good working relationship with for so long.

We'll have to disagree then.
No one looks "snappy" against Hopkins...no one.
Take a look back @ how ineffective Winky was against Bernard...he's never looked that bad...NEVER.
As far as that goes...take a look back @ Calzaghe against Kessler. Joe was effective & he was also aggressive throughout the fight. Calzaghe always takes a few rounds to get crankin'.
That being said...I made the exact statement a few days ago regarding Hopkins dropping Joe & that it would be an issue facing a heavy hitter like Pavlik. Hopkins is very surgical with his shots...it showed against Taylor in their first bout & towards the end of either the 9th or 10th round Hopkins had him out on his feet but refused (for some odd reason) to press the issue. The thing is...it was a flash knockdown for Joe & he's had several of those throughout his career...& he soldiers through for the win.
Whether or not he could do so with "Heavy Hands Kelly" is a totally different matter...just like whether or not Kelly could handle Joe's volume & awkward style .
