Quintana didn't neutralize Cotto very well at all. I think his style suits Berto better at this point. Berto isn't a pure pressure fighter, like Cotto, he is more of a boxer-puncher than a pure pressure fighter, which is why you see him backed up without him really caring, and you see him fight using his speed to land while remaining far enough away to not get hit at distance himself.
I think he's being over hyped right now cause of his speed, speed is obviously hugely important but its not everything, not everybody with great speed turns out to be a great fighter, look at Ed Hopson, even Zab, and there have been others.
I don't think he looks comfortable going backwards, not at all. He's very predictable offensively but he gets away with it for the most part cause of his speed. His defense may be improving but its still sketchy and there have always been a lot of rumors about his chin, going back to even the amateurs.
Collazo or Quintana might be good choices because there not heavy hitters but they could definitely cause him some problems, big problems. Paul Williams is too much for him right now IMO. I've never once thought Margarito was anything approaching a great fighter but that would be a man versus a boy and Berto would not see the final bell. Not right now.
I like him, don't get me wrong, he's an exciting prospect but I just think the hype is getting out of control because of his speed. He needs to continue evolving, continue improving. Not counting him out or anything, he just needs to keep improving, he's got a lot of ability, needs to work on technical assets of his game.
Berto is a very exciting fighter, and seems like a nice guy too. I like him. However I really do think it is a joke and a bit of an embrassment for him to be called the WBC Welterweight Champion of the World, and have Floyd Mayweather's old belt.
If they were to fight right now, I would pick Kermit Cintron to KO Berto in the middle rounds.
We'll see though.
"You knocked him down...now how bout you try knockin me down ?"
Oops
I tend to agree that Berto definately has loads more boxing talent than Cintron, but Berto is far from untouchable, and I feel that Cintron could use his power well in the mid-rounds to a stoppage, and in fact if that's the next fight Berto takes, we could see Cintron holding a strap again.
I still think a better choice would be Collazo. Whatever happens he needs to avoid Margarito, Cotto and Williams like the plague for now.
For every story told that divides us, I believe there are a thousand untold that unite us.
cintron or quintana would be good opponents as some have said already.. I had to rewind that uppercut about 7 times before i could continue watching the fight.. was a thing of beauty..
berto definitely impressed me, but i have to agree that his defense looks a bit shaky at times, and a big puncher, or even a pressure fighter would possibly crack him.. it doesn't look like he has the elusive speed for defense, but that may also be because he has confidence in his power and just wants to stand in there with you and bang if he has too.. i will definitely be interested to see his next fight/opponent..
