If we are talking 12 rounds then id probably go for duran to win 8 rounds to 4 with a couple of knockdowns thrown in.

If its 15 then duran stops him late on with a vicious flurry.

The guy was like a fucking steam train once he got going!!

Both had excellent choins, huige hearts and power in spades.

    The difference between the two?

Duran's better ringcraft and underrated defense.

What's that got to do with this thread? He fought none of them at Lightweight
I dunno about that, really. The fact that Duran was able to beat Leonard at Welter, and go 15 rounds with Hagler at middleweight is probably largely due to the ring smarts he had that would have proven to much for Chavez imo. Not saying it directly supports that thought, but I couldn't imagine Chavez ever even living with SRL at welter, not to mention go 15 with Hagler and fight all the bigger guys like Duran did. He was a monsterous Super feather and LW as well, but Duran was clearly a better natural fighter imo, and just as strong at lightweight as Chavez.
Exactly!!! and as stated by the Wind. As great a fighter Chavez is, Duran is a LEGEND. I don't want to go by the QUALITY of fighters Duran has met in his career because Chavez will definitely fail in comparison. I really don't think a lightning fast super skilled fighter like Meldrick Taylor but was featherfisted a total threat to Chavez.

Chavez would give a very good account of himself against Duran and I do not think Duran could stop him, JCC had an excellent chin and solid defence. Duran would also have to deal with the onslaught of the superstar so it will not be all one way. Finally JCC fought at Super Feather and was a champion at that weight.

I go with Duran all day and twice on Sunday. I have sdaid it before and will again the Roberto Duran at LW is one of the toughest and greatest fighters to ever lace up the gloves.

Even if you did manage to beat him at LW you would never do it twice.

I also want to make it clear that is in no way an insult or in any way directed to down play Chavez skills because JCC is a legend and was an ATG at 135 but Duran was just another animal at that weight class.

So I guess Chavez would be #2 all time greatest LW?

And Only beat 1 of them who beat him back twice. Chavez may well have faired similarily! I still stick with Duran thought just thought I'd point that out

Chavez was so brief at Pure lightweight but was solid at Jr.Light as well.I think some tend to overlook him there....almost like a "Pre Taylor-Post Taylor" situation?I think Duran takes it at Lightweight over distance and some what wide

No this would put him above Duran seeing as Henry Armstrong is the greatest lightweight of all time.

Pernell and Benny Leonard had the boxing skills to frustrate Duran, but definitely not the power.

Duran is the smarter boxer he would always find a way to win and overall had better attributes then Chavez who was 1 dimensional although he was great at what he does

Great matchup, I'd go with Duran UD. I've got Duran as top 5 p4p all time. At Lightweight I would have JCC about 8th of all time.
