I've just investigated this a bit.
The situation was; The cut was ruled to be a result of a clash of heads, however neither the doctor or the referee deemed Rahman unable to continue after the cut was inspected.
Rahman himself ruled himself unable to continue claiming he couldn't see punches coming and said "I'm not fighting with one eye."

If that is true then that is a pretty poor show by Rahman, on a show billed as some kind of last chance..

The fight was mired in so much controversy I completely forgot about the cut itself. I remember thinking, "Hey, that doesn't look that bad," and it makes sense that if the doc was saying it wasn't bad enough to be stopped by virtue of the cut and Rahman refused to continue then that's a TKO. Yes, it was a cut that came from a headbutt, but there are cuts and there are cuts. I guess if Jermain Taylor had complained about the cut from Hopkins' headbutt that would have been a TKO. It wasn't a fight-stopping cut. I've reversed my opinion: Rahman deserves the L for being a whiny baby. If he'd fought on (let's be real, Toney doesn't have real KO power at HW) they would have staunched the bleeding and the work Rahman put in in the first could have been repeated.

The doc wasn't able to explain himself clearly. I was still confused after his explanation.
    Oops

I think the doctor informed the referee that Rahman said he couldn't continue, so the referee reported it as Doctor advsing the stoppage. I think!

I agree largely with what you've said, but I must mention Toney's head.
Famed for his granite chin, Toney's not adverse to allowing his hard head to bludgeon incoming opponents.
Like Hagler I don't think he does it intentionally, but he certainly doesn't avoid it. So I think the cut would have been a big isue later in the fight, which is why Rahman should have tried stop it on his terms!

Absolutely nothing wrong with the desicion, Rahman quit on himself plain and simple... It was stopped because he told the doctor he couldnt see so thats why it was stopped... If Rahman kept his big mouth shut the stoppage would never have happened
