From chemistry... reactions slow as the temperature declines. The increased injury could be caused by your bodies inability to solve the problem quickly, as the required process can not take place in the same time span. In your hands case you may not be able to clench your fist at the right time due to the cold, therefore your actually punching incorrectly, which is causing the pain.
Although I do notice when I played footy for school in the cold and you smothered a kick it will sting incredibly badly, so yeah not quite too sure.

Muscles are stiffer or tensed,
less blood circulation,
synovial fluid in joints is less lubricant.

It takes longer to warm up most people cant be arsed. Your Metobalisom is Higher, you use more fuel energy and liqiud in the cold. The optimum temperature for the body to work is 54 degrees F. Hope this Helps. I look at people trying to loose weight in gyms it makes me cringe with more plastic on trying to train and lose weight, never in a million years dehydrated the body doest work as it should, I think common sense and watch sense isnt common.
