To bad. He's one of the guys who is going to get some of the biggest buzz when he turns pro and I've read before that when he does turn pro it will likely be at 135 so obviously the 119 lb limit was a struggle for him. Good thing he was found though.
Not to be twisted but Its better prior to contest & that it was not in the ring while in action taking punches,Amatuer or not!!Too many get hurt bad draining down......Sure he will be back.

Its bad when fighters like Russell and Gavin can't make weight, its not like the Olympics has just sprung out of nowhere.
Good luck to him in whatever he does next

This is just a bad deal for all involved. I'm just glad he is ok. For those interested in his side of the story read this:
Local Boxer Stunned by Misfortune - washingtonpost.com
It's a lot different than the initial story released by USA Boxing that they "told him to rehydrate" and he didn't. Also, much different than him being found uncounscious by Luis Yanez.
On a related note, I am at the Ringside World Championships and Under-19 Tournament in Kansas City. I have a bunch of vids that I will post tomorrow after the tournament finals start, but here's one great amateur bout between Manny Taylor and Gary Russell III (Allen), the brother of the former Olympic team member. Probably one of the most entertaining amateur bouts that I've seen in a while. Russell speed is incredible and Taylor was very calculated in his strategy throughout.
