Every event they ran seemed to have some major flaw... a cut stoppage, a poke in the eye, etc. Nothing ever went as planned. And a smaller org experiencing growing pains surely wasn't the one to try to take mma mainstream. Dana's surely laughing right now, but the last UFC event (89) sucked more balls than I can remember.
I think in mma the fights are too short, the fighters gas too often from the 5 minute rounds, then they look sloppy, can be far too boring on the ground and have too many decisions to be mainstream. I like it, always will, but it seems now that it will only ever be ppv. The talent pool isn't yet deep enough to overcome these issues.
Maybe the way to go is back to the old tournament style.
