Ruben Olivares Best Fights ??

Not really knowledgable on Olivares i did see his fight vs Arguello and a few others plus few highlights, but i haven't seen enough of him and i don't really know where to start so could anyone recommend some of his best fights to start off with ?? cheers.

This is one I want/need more fights of.One that is a must have is His fight with Lionel Rose For Rose's Bantam Title,An exercise in sheer left hook brutality.Also His three with 'Chucho' Castillo .He went 2-1 with Castillo who Rose Defeated in an early Christmas gift decision,just prior to Falling to Oliveras.Would definatley like to see more.

One of my favourite fighters, his fights with Castillo, Rose, Rudkin, Pimental and Chacon 1975 are highlights.
His fight with Alexis Arguello is my all time favourite and Olivares although beaten put up one of his best performances, he cut easily and his walk up style meant he got nailed and dropped a few times but for sheer action Olivares does not disappoint. He would be a mega PPV star today.

Rubens my fav. Bantamweight of all time.

Ruben was at one point Mexicos greatest and most famous boxer. Up until the arrival of JCC no other Mexican boxer had been adored and followed as Olivares once was. Many people feel JCC is Mexicos greatest but there's plenty out there who feel Olivares quality of opposition exceeds that of JCCs and therefor he's greater. Whatever the case maybe they are both great.

Let me start off with the nickname. I've mentioned this before but he's nickname simply means "Barbwire" it was said that his hair was as thick and straight that you could poke your finger with it. So they started calling him "El Puas". He had other nicknames like "Rock A Bye", "El Chamaco De Tepito" which means "The Rasacal from Tepito" Tepito being the neighborhood he was from. "El Nino De La Bondojo" meaning "The Kid from La Bondojo" Bondojo being the smaller area in which he lived and grew up in.

Ruben to me was one of those fighters that get's vastly over looked I think much of that has to do with him being a Bantam. He wasn't the fastest, he wasn't the quickest on his feet but he was a warrior. He had the biggest set of balls on this planet. It's like he was immune to pain and when blood flowed down his face it was all but too much of a familiar scene for him and he fought on valliantly. He was a devastating body puncher along with McCallum , JCC & Cotto I consider them the best at this trait. You kill the body then the head will fall. He had 2 big steraks of TKO's in his career one at 23 TKOs and the other at 21 TKOs consecutively.

The NOT so coming out party: Burruni, the former champ Burruni was his 1st step up into world rated opponents. Well it wasn't that much of a party since the fight was won by Ruben when Burruni quit in the 3rd round. At that time in Mexican boxing rules it stated that if a fighter turned his back to this opponent that was him quitting meaning he did not want to continue. Burruni did just that after Ruben landed a series of punches.

The REAL coming out party: Sakurai, he had been in the rankings for some time and had challenged for the title before so this was a big step up in class onto World Class and it was also an eliminator bout for a chance to face the champ. In the fight Ruben paced himself well and dictated the fight to his likings in the 6th round he stops Sakurai and becomes the #1 challenger.

The Time Has Come to Crown the King: Rose, at the time was the Bantam King Pin and had been since beating the great Fighting Harada for the title. Rose had defended the title against fighters like Sakurai, Chucho Castillo & Rudkin. Ruben however did become part of that list instead he promised prior to the fight that he would beat Rose and he did. From the begining of the bell Ruben began to do his work to the body attacking it at every opp. to he had. He drops Rose in the 2nd but Rose fights back. In the 5th round Ruben conitnues to punish Rose he drops him again but this time Rose doesn't make it up and Ruben crowns himself as the Bantam champ. One of the best moments in that fight comes until the end when Ruben drops Rose and the ref. counts him out Ruben walks over and picks up Rose from the canvas in a great moment of sportsmanship. The media, fans and police filled the ring in a craze....

But like many fighters of yesteryear and even some today all the fame and fortune can bee too much. He started to ballon up in weight and began to struggle to make weight also rumors of him hitting the liquor bottle began to spread. He and his people denied all of that.


The trilogy begins: Chucho Castillo, was a tough and well know boxer who fought some of the best names of his era. Fighters like: Medel, Pimentel, Rose, Herrera & Lara. In the 1st fight Ruben boxed well won most of the early rounds and then Chucho came on late still I had Ruben by a score of 10-5 in rounds in his favor. Chucho dropped Olivares in 2 of his 3 fights with him but could not put him away. Int eh rematch Ruben suffers a cut early in the fight and fights like that the whole way through. His career actually did a good job considering the cut. But in the 14th round Chucho makes that eye bleed profusely and forces the stoppage of the fight making Chucho the new Bantam champ. In the 3rd fight it was all Ruben as he manuvered his way throught Chucho winning rounds I had him 13-2 in rounds for Ruben.


The little name with the BIG fight: Kazuyoshi Kanazawa, this is one of my fav. Rube fights because here was Kanazawa a guy Ruben had previously blasted in 2 rounds but now had worked himself up the rankings to a title shot. This bout proved many things 1 of them being that Ruben could win a fight outside of his backyard which was Los Angeles. He traveled to Japan to defend his title and beat a game opponent. Ruben had put in work early in the fight to the body so late in the fight Kanazawas feet where jello. Ruben get's the stoppage in the 14th round and defends his title in this classic fight.


Byt this time a rumor had now began to spread that not only was Ruben drinking and having issues with weight but there was also a drug problem. Although evidence never surfaced of the alcohol or drug use.

The Spoiled Homecoming: Rafael Herrera was a well known boxer at the time they met he had beaten fighters like Castillo and Rodolfo Martinez. So he was picked as Rubens homecoming opponent. Ruben was back in Mexico City fighting at his home. Well the homecoming was spoiled. Ruben struggled to make weight and it showed in the fight. I must say Ruben fought a good fight but Herrera was fast and is also a good puncher. He cut Rubens eye, right eye (if memory serves me right) and he was bleeding profusely in the fight. In the 8th round they start trading punches. Both landing really good shots. Then suddenly in a exchange of punches Herrera missed with a combo and you can clearly see him miss. Ruben just falls whether it's from fatigue or blood loss mayeb both but he falls and the ref. counts him out. Herrera becomes the new champ. they rematched later at catchweight and Herrerea won a MD fight. The fight was at a catcheight because the Sup. Bantam div. did not exsist.

All in all Rubens one of my fav.
I have 1 fav. fighers all-time per div. and Ruben is the man at Bantam. He was a guy who fought until he bled to death if he had to.

The Pimentel is also a goodie being that both were backed by the Angelino people.

Vicente was a superb Southpaw slick and with power to knock you out. He's one of the best finishers I've seen. He never wasted any punches and once he had you hurt he knew exactly what to do.

Completely agree, Ruben wasn't a 1 punch hitter or a power puncher.

He systematically broke you down with hard crushing blows to the body and he'd rinse and repeat the shots over and over until you folded. His will to beat you was immense.

Just want to reply to this thread again i couldn't find any Ruben Olivares, fights except for highlights. But this great uploader recently has uploaded the first two Chuco Castillo fights.

And a few other early Ruben Olivares fights with Ushiwakamaru Harada, Tiny Palacio, Walter Seeley, and theres more to come. Hopefully he uploads the 3rd Chuco Castillo fight, and the fights you mentioned Mick.
