Its not about punching its about position. Getting the feet in position so you are balanced to lead or counter. Theres lots of ways to practice it, give you one. On a punch Bag every Gym has one, all you to do is push the bag so its swinging a bit. When in motion start Shadow Boxing the Bag but dont Hit it, move with it stay about 18 inches away all the time just keep moving all the time. Forward Back, side to side always keep giving it a push when it needs one.
I've remember you mention that before but I haven't tried it yet. It sounds like a great way to get a feel for distance while working on footwork if you ask me.

What I like about this, and I could be wrong, but is seems to me this is an especially good drill for someone who is tall and has range and fights that way...but needs to or wants to work on infighting. This to me has been a thing I constantly want to work on. i'm sure it as others things are meant for any fighter, tall, short etc...but I can see how it would train a person to be comfortable in close, and a good shorter infighter can do that to us tall guys.
