Only the ones from down here mate, they sting and are uncomftable but dont kill.

I have come out of the surf at like 830 am after getting out there on my own at about 6am a saw a seal on the beach in front of where my clothes were with a bite out it and blood etc! I couldnt belive I didnt know it happened while I was out there.Must have been real quick and underwater or maybe it was still a bit dark when I went out and I thought it was a rock and I just stepped over like a fool. Lucky me anyway.

Does that mean something nasty must have come along and taken a bite out of it?

Yeah a shark bite, fresh as too i stepped out of the water to go to work and there was the seal about 4 feet long laying in front of the rock that my clothes were laying on with a bite about a foot wide taken out the middle of it.It was cold so I take it it happened while i first hit the water or just prior to me getting in there and maybe washed up. as it was dead high tide going out.Im not sure how long it takes for somethig to go cold in the water miniutes i would expect or even if seals are warm blooded. He wasnt stiff.

    Silly/lucky me either way.

man you got lucky, that could have been you. i hear that the reason why most sharks attack humans is because we look like seals when we are surfing and sh*t out there. if thats true, i mean we cant blame the sharks for doing what is natural to them. anyways you are one lucky guy that that poor seal got hit before you did

Very shallow reefs where I usually surf but I sit in about 6 feet of water and paddle about 10 feet in towards shore over about a 2 feet and less deep reef so Im safe for most of it. But yeah your right.

I dont piss in the water if i can help it theres amonia in blood and in piss too and a great white can smella drop of bloodat about a mile away so I figure
1 +1 =2 in this case. So Im keep number ones to myself .

Is there any threat of sea snakes when surfing??

I'm not sure how far my phobia of snakes goes because of limited experience of them, but I can safely say that a sea snake would scare me more than any spider..

One time I was staying up at the Murray and during our three week stay there we saw 2 snakes right in our camp. There was an area where we would swim, and fortunately this particular day none of us were swimming in there, but we were pulling in our fishing rods, and this snake same slithering across the top of the water right through our swimming spot and up onto the banks.. Let me tell you it was 10 times as scary heading across the water.. If I was in there up to my neck in water, and I saw that snake coming along at head height, and not really having any way of getting away from it fast, that would have been the worst.. I'm pretty sure it was a red belly black snake as well as it came up the bank and through the middle of our camp before going off into the brush, and we got a good look at it.

The bad thing with being in the water is that you can't get away from things fast... At least on land you can kind of run from a snake if you're on the ball, but being up to your neck in water and seeing a shark or a sea snake would be terrifying. One thing that keeps me from ever going scuba diving is the thought of a sea snake coming at or around me while i'm under water... They look so evil how they move through the water just like they do on land.. Except they just kind of float along as well like a dragon... evil.... Those huge Moray eels are pretty evil creatures as well..

It could happen, but its not very likely, sea snakes are pretty mellow tempered.
But then again Steve Irwin got taken out by a stingray barb,so anythings possible
