This early some boxing writers already picked PAC to win this fight:
"Surprise, surprise. It took all of a few days after Pacquiao's victory over De La Hoya that Mayweather expressed his interest in fighting the furious Filipino. There isn't a more appealing fight in the sport. Mayweather was the pound-for-pound king until earlier this year, when he retired unexpectedly. The mantle as boxing's best fighter was then assumed by Pacquiao, who has actually looked more dominant than Mayweather appeared during his reign. The only thing that separates the two would be Pacquiao's activity -- Mayweather last fought in December 2007. The fight likely wouldn't happen until fall 2009.
The winner just may be the best fighter of this generation.
Odds: pick'em; Matt's pick: Pacquiao W 12 (split).
Roach on why on Boxing Mayweather Jr is harder for Pacquiao than De La Hoya
link: Roach on why Boxing Mayweather Jr is harder for Pacquiao than De La Hoya
"There has been a lot of speculation that Floyd Mayweather Jr. could come out of retirement and fight Manny Pacquiao. Pacquiao's trainer Freddie Roach admits he likes that fight and would welcome it. Roach also understands that Mayweather Jr. would be a tougher fight than Oscar De La Hoya was.
Quoted recently in the Grand Rapids Press, Roach stated in regards to Mayweather Jr.: "Mayweather is a much more technical boxer, and he's kind of more of a passive fighter."
Roach added that the way Pacquiao would have to fight, landing combinations and getting out of the way, plus Mayweather's speed would make it a much harder task. Roach stated: "He (Mayweather) likes go to the ropes and lay there and so forth. You know, Manny's thing would have to be land combinations and get out of the way, because Mayweather's got that speed. So it would be a much more difficult task than this one (De La Hoya fight.)"
Ha haMayweather Jr. would be a tougher fight (for PAC) than Oscar De La Hoya...
.
I'm with the overwhelming majority. I think PBF wins handily. You can't go overboard based on Pac's humiliation of the washed-up old Oscar. Pac was still several weight divisions over his best weight. And PBF is no Oscar. Too much speed and boxing skills for Pac to handle.
<I have even heard PacFans go as far as saying that "Oh, see? Now we can prove that the Phillipines is way better than Mexico for boxing!" I mean, come on! Mexico has been in the boxing scene for quite a long time and almost every lower weight has a couple of champions or ranked boxers every year. And suddenly, you have a Phillipino boxer appear on the scene and for that the Phillipines is better than Mexico when it comes to boxing? I can imagine nobody followed boxing in the Phillipines before Pac made it to the spotlight. Pac is good, actually, GREAT! I can list his qualities (which I already have) but these fans won't admit his questionable decisions against JMM, these fans won't admit his flaws, these fans just can't see Pac loosing AT ALL. During interviews, 24/7 show, etc. Pac and all of his team mention over and over how ODLH is passed his prime, is old, worned out, drained, etc. And the only ones that "missed" that part were PacFans, I don't get it. Tell them Pac is fighting a heavyweight and they'll assure you Pac will win no matter what.><Chino>
Drop it man. Them discussion with CRAZIES will get you nowhere! Don't bring your level down, to make theirs go up. My Gramps used to say, "If you give credence to what matters to crazies, then you're no better than them crazies yourself". How about it?
If you do so, it frees you to just enjoy better discussions... better company!
No, all I am saying is that ODLH was passed his prime, old, worned out, drained, no gas left in the tank, and pretty much everything else that Pac and his whole team even mentioned. Even they all knew this was an opportunity to add a nice name to the resume. It happens all the time when boxing legends decide to stay in the ring longer than they should: Ali, Leonard, Tyson, Chavez, etc. etc. etc. and now ODLH. I am surprised people ignore this fact. Pac is good, no doubt, and keeps improving in my opinion. He just happened to fight an old, worned out, drained, passed his prime, ODLH. Just like ODLH did when he faced JC Chavez. What goes around comes around I guess.
KananKrus,
I'll give it a try.
The funny thing is that before the fight NO ONE knew that ODLH was washed up. The media thought that the fight was a mismatch and thus bad for the sport. Most boxers thought pacman would lose. The sports books had pacman as a heavy underdog. Even a philipino politician thought pacman would lose. Many people even thought pacman would get knocked out! Going into the ring as such an underdog and still beaming with confidence and courage speaks for itself. The win was huge. This was not a case of Calzaghe v. Jones where the boxing public universally thought Calzaghe would win on points because RJJ was passed his prime. This was a HUGE upset.
Did ODLH change that much from May of 2007 - when he battled Floyd to a split decision loss - to ODLH in December of 2008, when he was destroyed by Pacquiao? It is obvious he changed, but Mayweather didn't maul ODLH like Pacquiao did and Mayweather is naturally a bigger man than Pacquiao.
Because of his accomplishments and ability, PBF should be heavily favored in a fight with Pacquiao, but the intrigue for the fight is justified.
Pac will be very very different from all the fighters Mayweather had faced so I give the win to Pac.
Mayweather's shoulder roll will be no problem for Pac.![]()

None of them connected as they did in previous fights. Look at both of their faces after the fight, how they were not tired, etc. I think a lot of it has to do with people disliking ODLH. And it is clear he is disliked. So no matter what, he won't get anybody's favor.he dominated by making Oscar miss damn near everyshot if that counts. but Oscar got undeserved rounds IMO. i also heard Mayweather said himself that Agustus was the hardest fight he ever had.
Mayweather too strong and accurate. Wins by kayo.
