Seems like it would be best to measure from fist to fist, as the goal is to punch, not poke (unless your Pauli Malignaggi ).
Explain why shoulder width plays a part in effective reach. It would seem to me that when two men have equal wingspan, the man with the less broad shoulders and longer arms would have a reach advantage. Right?

HBO arm length is from the armpit to end of the fist.

Thanks SweetPea, so both methods are flawed in my eyes, if wingspan is to the fingertips: arm length because it doesn't take shoulder width into account, and wingspan because it includes the length of the fingers. Again, seems it would be best to use wingspan from fist to fist.

Some measure from the arm pit to the end of the hand (Fingertip)...Others measure the entire wingspan....Sometimes you will see on television where a fighters reach is 27"....those are the times they measure from the armpit.......

It is the fingertip to fingertip measure that is most valid and used most often
