    Default For arm length

Do they measure from armpit to the end of the fist or wrist? I am confused because clothing is measured till the end of the wrist, and I have a 26' armlength to the end of my fist, but my reach looks smaller than that of Roy Jones or Mayweather who have 25' and 26' arms respectively.

    I thought they measured wingspan...

Which means a man with wide shoulders would not have the reach of a narrower guy with the same measurement.

well they do it both ways.....reach is finger tip to fingertip which means a
guy with wider shoulders and the same reach does have shorter arms, obviously. Thats why fighters need to stand at an angle and move the jabbing shoulder forward to increase their jab length rather than standing squared up. (just one of many reasons i know i know!)
more recently I'm seeing arm length as well which to my knowledge is still to the end of the finger tip from the armpit. If there is a person who can post a rule from a officiating body on that please do. It may not be in a rule book since its just the stuff they post for info and not a official measurement or criteria .I'm 6'4" (76") and have a 78" reach
    Ali's was 82 i think

I know this is an old post, but I always wonder about this when they use the arm pit to finger tip method on HBO. It seems like that would less useful than the wingspan, because the shoulder width does play a part in the effective reach. Seems like it would be best to measure from fist to fist, as the goal is to punch, not poke (unless your Pauli Malignaggi ).

Explain why shoulder width plays a part in effective reach. It would seem to me that when two men have equal wingspan, the man with the less broad shoulders and longer arms would have a reach advantage. Right?

HBO arm length is from the armpit to end of the fist.

Thanks SweetPea, so both methods are flawed in my eyes, if wingspan is to the fingertips: arm length because it doesn't take shoulder width into account, and wingspan because it includes the length of the fingers. Again, seems it would be best to use wingspan from fist to fist.
