Default Boxing Perspective: Miguel Cotto vs. Michael Jennings

Miguel Cotto started the year 2008 as the man to beat at 147 pounds with a hard fought win over the highly rated Shane Mosley. When Cotto entered the 147 pound weight class, some people criticised that he simply wasnʼt big enough for the welterweights and that the larger fighters would be too much for him to handle.

Cotto answered the critics with a sheer dominant performance over fellow countryman Carlos Quintana. Cotto looked really strong a... Full Boxing Article here...

Not sure how strong Jennings is but saw that pic of him standing next to Cotto & this will be the 2nd WW Miguel has faced who'll be much taller than he is.

Hmmn ..... going from the likes of Takaloo and Ross Minter to Miguel Cotto may be a teensy weensy step too far for Jennings.

Remember the Gomes fight, when Cotto just strolled around the ring breaking him up bit by bit?

I think this will be equally as one-sided, I'm afraid.

Not to piss on your fire, but Mayweather was still the man to beat at the begining of 2008, he was set to fight Oscar in September and didn't pull out until a few months into 08'.

What's with the Mayweather hate brought on by Tam? Mayweather has shown more heart in his career than Cotto ever has. I've seen him fought guys like Burton, guys he could have easily outboxed, and Floyd has decided to stand there and trade with him, same with the big puncher from Africa in N'Dou. Floyd didn't fight Margarito and Cotto because he was facing better fighters who would give him more problems. Cotto is a great fighter, but he wouldn't be able to do anything against Mayweather, he is too slow, and Mayweather isn't Mosley or Judah. Same with applies with Margarito, it would be like a blind man trying to box a guy who can see.

Good article Tam, as an American fight fan, I don't know much about Jennings and assumed he was a Gary Locketesque fighter. You did a good job introducing me to him.

I must disagree with Taeth to a certain extent. When he moved up to welterweight, and Cotto, Margarito, and Pwill were viable top ten opponents, Mayweather fought Baldomir, Hatton and ODLH. Of course, it made financial sense to fight them, but to say they were a bigger challenges - to quote you "Floyd didn't fight Cotto and Margarito because he was facing better fights who would give him more problems" - than Margarito or Cotto were at that point, is wrong. Do you consider Hatton to pose more of a problem for PBF than Cotto and Margarito? Nothing wrong with that, in fact I'm sure many of the British posters here may agree with you, but I just didn't know you liked Hatton so much . No one is saying Mayweather wouldn't be favored against Cotto or Margarito now or then, I'd favor him against any of them (and Pac), but that doesn't take away from the fact that once he stepped up to welterweight he choose to take the money fights rather than the challenges. It's no diss on PBF, to be sure, he is still a great, and he had already done a ton in his career, but at the end of the day, he retired when the welterweight division was knee-deep in talent with Pwill, Cotto, and Margarito. Moreover, he already beat ODLH and when he retired ODLH, rather than the above three, was the only fight he was considering.

On the other hand...Tam, I don't think it is fair to say you can't imagine PBF putting forth the heart Cotto put forth. PBF has heart. He is more of an entertainer than a boxer possibly, but he has heart. You can see the passion in his fights. Also, Cotto wasn't dominating Margarito through the sixth round, it was 4-2 Cotto and the inertia was definitely on Margarito's side. Recall Emmanual Stewart making the point in the early goings of that fight that it didn't appear Cotto could withstand Margarito for 12 rounds.
