Hanging on to the last playoff spot by one point is doing very well? One of the two teams right behind them has 3 games in hand as well.

In the NHL it's not how many regular season games you win it's when and if you have a hot goalie in playoffs.

While that is somewhat true (Luongo gave the best goaltending performance I have ever seen two years ago and the Canucks got bounced in the 2nd round), you need to win enough games to make the playoffs. Carolina is in danger of not making the playoffs.
