Since Williams, Margaritos fought Cintron, Cotto & now SSM.
Williams since then has lost to CQ, rematched him and sparked him out, some guy named Kolle & Spinks.

I can't say this 100% but I'm willing to bet he (Margarito) would have rematched him would all the stars have aligned.
This may have just been hype I bought into, but I was under the impression that Williams moved weight classes because Margo wouldn't sign for a rematch. Also he just beat Phillips, so last year he lost, avenged his defeat in devastating fashion, then tested the waters at 160, then broke down the #2 ring rated 154 lber. This is not to diminish what Margarito has done, but he only had two fights last year to Williams four.

It was not that Margarito would not fight Williams because Margarito will fight anyone...The whole Williams Margarito rematch went more or less as follows...

The first fight ended...July of 2007....

Williams sat around Margarito wanted a rematch Williams was playing games...Telling people how great he was...vieing for more money etc....

Margarito fights Johnson...in his return November of that year....

Short while later Williams signs to fight Quintana in February of 2008....

    Loses the title to CQ.....

Now Williams has lost some of his bargaining value due to no title and he lost his first defense...Bringing doubts to everyone about how good he really was......

By time Williams fights and loses to Quintana Margarito is in Negotiations for a rematch with Cintron.....Fights and beats Cintron in April 2 months after PW loses his title to CQ..

BUT now PW has his rematch set with CQ for two months after Tony beats Cintron for the IBF title...

Tony is now set to fight Cotto in July.....

Williams knew this and after beating Quintana went looking for the top guys in the division to fight next...Williams was pissed off because everyone went on without him....

In all seriousness he waited around thinking everyone was going to wait for him and no one did....he lost the title and felt he was still the man and everyone would still wait for him.....Williams actually believed that everyone would wait for him to rematch Quintana before they signed to fight anyone else thinking he was the biggest name in the WW division....

when he won the CQ rematch he was actually offended that Tony and Cotto signed to fight each other....He felt he was the one to be the man in the division to decide who was #1......When in actuality he was the only one to think it was OK to wait almost a yr before defending his title and the fact he lost it meant nothing to anyone else because he was "Paul Williams".......

Right after Cotto Margarito Williams wanted a rematch with Tony but he wanted it with in 2 months of the Cotto fight giving Tony NO time to recover and have a training camp...after all Williams had only fought 60 seconds in 6 months he was healthy and had no battle wounds to heal...

Big advantage for Williams NO?....But again in Williams mind it mattered none because he was Paul,Williams and when he comes calling you need to appreciate he is giving you the time of day......

So since Tony and actually, Cotto, said they needed more time he decides he is being avoided because they would not fight when he wanted it.....knowing he was starting to get stale just laying around fighting twice in a year....1 loss one 60 second bout....Williams had to go somewhere so instead of sitting he gets a fight with Andy Kolle at Middle weight that allowed him to not worry about weight and not just sit around becoming rusty....

Williams actually thought he should get a title fight against either Forrest or Pavlik without even having a single bout in either division....again calling both scared......

Kelly was already obligated to Hopkins and Forrest to Mora....

Williams talks more shit and thinks everyone is to fight him exactly when he says or they are fearing him....

He is the only one who has yet to realize every person he calls out already has their dance cards filled when he does or they just fought with in the last month...Williams does not think they need 2 or 3 more months to train because he already had 3 months sitting around to train so he is ready Phuk them...

Plus he fails to realize that while he has a very good record Tony is the only elite fighter he has ever beaten,,,, he is not the top draw and to this day his best wins outside a hard fought win with Margarito are....The Quintana rematch and an over the hill Phillips....Shit he lost his only Title defense to a guy Cotto beat silly

Thanks for clearing that up, could make a reality show out of boxing negotiations, actually that's a million dollar idea right there. Thing is that, while he lost to Quintana he battered him in one round in the rematch much more convincing than Cotto did, and he still does hold a victory over Margarito. So technically he should still have some negotiating power at 147, even if he doesn't know how to use it. And while you say Phillips was over the hill, he showed he was still capable of being competitive with Spinks which is no easy feat. Holding wins over the current #1 and #6 ring rated fighters at 147 AND the current #3 ring rated fighter at 154 has to count for something.

Sure he should but thing is like I said Williams want guys to fight when he says and seems to not want guys to fight anyone else until he calls them....

Like I stressed he actually thought that because he was ready to fight that the other guys should have just stepped in the ring....forget the fact they had just fought a month or 2 ago and were healing he did not even want them to have full training camps...he wanted them to fight in a month after his team made the offer.....yet he lays around a year and refused to accept any titiel offers...he took the CQ fight because he thought it would be an easy defense....It back fired...

Yes, that's why I said he doesn't know how to use his leverage. Also, you have to give him credit for making up his loss against Quintana.

I'd have Margarito much higher on the list than PW, for reasons so ably explained by Daxx, and think that PW likes to portray himself as being "avoided" but such appearance is overhyped to a certain extent. Also have to take some issue with Williams being "much more convincing" than Cotto against Quinitana (both A-listers too). He lost fight one in a decision for which there was absolutely no controversy, and caught him in round 1 in fight II for a quick KO. Don't think that "big picture" is "more convincing" viewed in its totality. Cotto made Quinitana quit on his stool and pretty much broke him down in "convincing" fashion -- much like AM did in KC II and ultimately against Cotto too..

Now if AM beats SSM (which I think he will), and a rematch with Cotto (or another bigger marquee name) doesn't materialize, then I think the PW boosters may have a case. But right now, I don't see it.

I was 2 rows back when Williams caught Quintana, and he did it by setting up his punches properly.. Williams was drained and lethargic for the 1st fight, you can see he didnt have the same fire and volume he usually does..

I honestly put Margarito and Williams on par with each other... The the hat has me confused is Tony's non interest in a rematch with Paul. He was quoted as saying he would like to fight Cotto or Pac in his next fight, with no mention of Williams.. The only man to give him a loss during his great run at 147

I can see Tony wanting to make $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ before risk losing to Williams by fighting Cotto/Pac 1st so I'm not faulting him, but it goes against the moniker and mystique he built for himself putting the money in front of the comp... As were learning these guys who are the best at what they do, shouldnt be expected to risk life, well being and miss out on career pay days.. At the end of the day, this is a job for them and how they provide and put food on their table, none of us would work for less than what we deserve, especially if we specialize in what we do
