Reg himslef tells the story of when he was interviewing a particularly sullen and untalkative Sonny Liston. Liston got bored and fixed Reg with his 'Old Stoneface' look, then walked over to the door, put his shoulders against it and just ripped the whole door furnoture off the wall.
"Can you do that, little man." Sonny asked with a sneer.
"No, but if you think you're tough - can you do this?" asked Reg and he took a knife and plunged it several times into his leg, before getting up and walking out with the knife still sticking out.
Liston was staring at him goggle-eyed and - later - when someone talk him Rag had a wooden leg, he saw the funny side and telephoned Reg, gave him his interview and remained on good terms with him for the rest of his life.

Former ITV boxing commentator Reg Gutteridge, who died at the weekend at the age of 84 after a short illness, used to tell a terrific story about his friend Muhammad Ali.
It related to a dinner at which Gutteridge was seated next to the great man. 'You think you're hard,' said the Londoner, 'but are you as hard as this?'
Whereupon he stuck a fork into his left leg. Ali screamed with shock, as did all the victims of that party piece and the famous Gutteridge sense of humour. At that stage in their acquaintance, Ali did not know about his dining companion's wooden leg.
