If you mean undeserved hype, I'd probably go with Cooney.
There are probably a lot of fighters that are hyped to the max in their own country, but not elsewhere. That's where a guy like Audley comes in.

Kelly Pavlik is one. Even though he made it to a world champion. He is pretty one dimensional and overhyped and got took to school by a 43 yr old who he was expected to KO with ease.
People were so far ahead of talking about him for the future, reigning the division for years etc... they forgot about what was standing in front, Bernard Hopkins.

I wouldn't call Pavlik a hype job...I'm talking about fighters who were basically handed wins and whenever they fought anyone anywhere near good kind of like Primo Carnera

Gamboa.....I can not deny Oscars accomplishments but from day one as a professional I labeled him DeLaHypa. It really was NON STOP.
David Reid

You out of your mind. I expected better from you. Reid was an over achiever in the sport of Boxing. Not to many people can become World Champs fighting with basically one eye.
You on the Saddo's top 10 posters pound for pound list. But p4p or not take your neg rep.

HAHA...wut a Dikk. What goes around comes around potna but Im going to rise above this night
Reid skilled no doubt, slick fawka. But He rode that lone olympian hype all over the networks and burned quick.Just never did it for me,Loved his smashing on usually tough Rupa, what he did to Waaaay past it Brown is what I hold against him.You KNOW that was a mirage. It got ugly at the end with him, getting knocked around by so-so types.

Reid had fantastic skills. And a great right hand. But that eye was a liability. He was basically a one eyed fighter. For him to become a champion and beat some good fighters along the way, to me is highly impressive.
A bunch of idiots like to blame Reid's handlers for rushing him in against Felix Trinidad. They think they did a poor job of handling him. But them idiots don't know shiit about Boxing. I think they did of great job of handling him. Reid was already struggling with fighters he had no business struggling with in sparring. Him losing to a lesser fighter in the ring would not be a surprise. So they took advantage of his undefeated record and title and cashed him out against Felix Trinidad. He took a beating in the fight. But he accounted himself quite well and earned a career high pay day of 2.5 million I belive. If Reid would of lost prior to facing Trinidad there was no way he would earn that much money. It was the right move.
Hector Camacho Jr. and Francisco Bojado come to mind.
Both got spanked courtesy of Jesse James Leija.
"You knocked him down...now how bout you try knockin me down ?"

I don't think Gerry Cooney would be close. It seems everyone including HBO name him as the biggest hype job. Jimmy Young beat George Foreman two years before Cooney whooped his ass. Ron Lyle gave everyone problems including the "GREAT" Ali, Cooney took him out in 1 round, Norton was old but sure as hell didn't look it, took him out in 54 seconds. Look at his amatuer background one of the top amatuer fighter's took out the undefeated Cuban. I get sick of this shit on Cooney he went 55-3 in the amatuers and was beaten by the alltime greatest fighter's of all time. Do I need to name them ? Holmes,Foreman,Spinks. Nothing to be ashamed of at all in my book. Gave Holmes a helluva a tough time for the heavyweight crown. If weren't for Holmes saying " if Cooney wasn't white he wouldn't be worth a shit" every 5 mins I think we would look at him a little differently. He did what he had to do and did it by knocking the top ranked oppents out not by desicion.
Who I think is the biggest hype job ever is Tyson pure and simple. He was amazing when he was young but since his return after his imprisonment was even bigger than he originally was and did nothing great whatsoever.
Oscar De la Hoya, every time he steps up and fights a white or black fighter he loses but most of the time he gets a gift descision. You know why he gets it and I know why he gets it but i wont say it because i will get banned.
Rocky Marciano. number 1 he is a cruiserweight or a slightly bigger than average light heavyweight yet to this day little kids like some of you still think he could beat true 205 plus pound heavyweights not to mention the best guys he beat in his career were pushing 40 or started their careers as middleweights
Both Klitschko's. No heavyweights in the last 30 years has fought so many bums but recieved so much praise. Vitali beat Danny Williams a bum only known because he beat a washed up Mike Tyson. Corrie Sanders a joke fighter who is only known because he knocked out the glass chinned Wladimir. Byrd a middleweight made Vitali quit because he hurt his arm. Juan Carlos Gomez was a blown up cruiserweight with no skills. Sam Peter is a fat overweight slob who best wins came over Olev Maskeav another bum who gets knocked out every time he steps up
Wladimir was knocked out by Ross Purity a club fighter, Lamont Brewster another bum who is only known because he knocked out Wlad. The list goes on and on with the bums this joke fights but I actually seen some dumb dumb say Wlad and Vitali could both knock out a prime George Foreman. Simply amusing

Cooney? He was hyped for having big power because he had big power. He KTFO of Ken Norton and Ron Lyle, both in the first round. That deserves some notice, his power was not hype. He even wobbled Foreman in that first round before he got clocked.

Mark Breland was meant to be a combination of all that was good about Ray Leonard and Sugar Ray Robinson.
Breland was hardly a bust, but came no where near reaching the hype thrown at him.
Audley annoys me, he was just in it for the money, and from that point of view, he succeed, when the Beeb gave him a £1Million for his first ten fights.
If Audley put half the effort into fighting as he did hyping and self publicing himself, he would of beaten the Klitshcko brothers in the same night.
"Boxing is like jazz. The better it is, the less people appreciate it."

can't say Pavlik is all hype when he is STILL the reigning Middleweight champion of the world, and has wins over Taylor, Miranda, Zuniga, Zertuche, and Rubio, all either decent or very good competition, he's not unstoppable but IMO still the best in his respectable division, all i know though is that Pavlik Vs Abraham has to happen, also since when is it a shame to lose to Bernard Hopkins? IMO B-Hop should have been the first loss on Calzaghe's record
