Reid skilled no doubt, slick fawka. But He rode that lone olympian hype all over the networks and burned quick.Just never did it for me,Loved his smashing on usually tough Rupa, what he did to Waaaay past it Brown is what I hold against him.You KNOW that was a mirage. It got ugly at the end with him, getting knocked around by so-so types.
Reid had fantastic skills. And a great right hand. But that eye was a liability. He was basically a one eyed fighter. For him to become a champion and beat some good fighters along the way, to me is highly impressive.

A bunch of idiots like to blame Reid's handlers for rushing him in against Felix Trinidad. They think they did a poor job of handling him. But them idiots don't know shiit about Boxing. I think they did of great job of handling him. Reid was already struggling with fighters he had no business struggling with in sparring. Him losing to a lesser fighter in the ring would not be a surprise. So they took advantage of his undefeated record and title and cashed him out against Felix Trinidad. He took a beating in the fight. But he accounted himself quite well and earned a career high pay day of 2.5 million I belive. If Reid would of lost prior to facing Trinidad there was no way he would earn that much money. It was the right move.
Clearly you can not deny his skills. No boubt about it.But I think you sumed it up perfectly right there.Thats my point,he was riding with skills yes...but had emmence backing/buildup...and yes Hype stemming from the gold at the Olympics.I mean, who doesn't.The networks could not get to him fast enough and he was in the limelight from dayone.Clearly he was talented but could not totally meet the level of expections that his handlers and Media set for him.He was all balls in with Tito, fought like a champion...but he was done after that.
If Reid wouldn't of had that eye problem he would never of fought Trinidad when he did. But he had to. Doctors estimated he would have about a year before the eyelid impeded his vision enough to make boxing too dangerous. He had no choice but to cash out. And that's why I never consider David Reid a bust. He was handicapped Boxer.

Agreed here,He was definatly not a bust...he had substance and ability.Has to be commended for not only over coming opponents but legitament obstacles going into each and every fight. You could see the lid getting worse and worse as he went on.He started catching alot of straight shots and balance was becoming spotty. If I remember correctly, there was some talk about him facing Fellow Philadelphian Hopkins...that would have been bad.
