This thread is epic.
Calzaghe was a great fighter who is always going to have questions surrounding his resume. Regardless of the reasons behind it, there will be those questions.
I'm inclined to believe, as others have mentioned, that is was more a case of being around at the wrong time rather than a case of him ducking serious opposition. The Lacy, Kessler, and Hopkins fights are all very good wins. Admittedly, the Lacy fight doesn't look nearly as impressive in retrospect, but it's every bit as easy to argue that Calzaghe ruined Lacy as it is to say that he was simply overrated; I also feel that Hopkins beat him, but it was a close fight that could have gone either way, and that is impressive by itself.
I do find it funny that people are using Mayweather/Calzaghe to discredit the other fighter. In my opinion, Mayweather has the far superior resume and has fought much better opposition over numerous weight classes. That's not to say that he's a better fighter per se, just that's he has proven more in my eyes. Calzaghe was a great fighter, no doubt, but people are always going to argue about just how good he was.
Ok, I'm off to send Ross some neg rep now.
