mate i own every single chubby brown, bernard manning dvd there is to own and they are just about the 2 sickest comedians out there who go out of their way to offend everyone......and i love the fat fuckers for it.

But if chris rock is allowed to make a racial slur or connatation about white people on a regular and consistent basis that gets aired on prime time tv to women, men and children alike then how the hell can someone complain when the guy from seinfield gets a little bit too carried away at a live show??

    thats just double standards!!!

I agree completely. There are double standards and I think it's bollocks. I think that ALL comedians should be able to make the jokes they want. Unfortunately the media and television is controlled by a bunch of PC wankers who will dictate what is considered as acceptable or appropriate. They are hypocrites.

He started callin an audience member a nigger that is totally different to making a witty play on how we all react to race. Do you think kids really watch Chris Rock & go join the Nation of Islam.

That show makes fun of a lot of stereotypes about black people as well. You have all the Bernard Manning dvds but obviously can't stand it when the shoe is on the other foot. Seriously, you can't say that Bernard Manning's comedy is ok, but for some reason Chris Rock's isn't.

Here is more on the Michael Richards incident to show it was not him taking any kind of comedic license rather just bein racially abusive to audience members who responded to him takin da piss

The only 2 stand up comedians to receive widespread backlash in the last 40 years due to their 'material' were Andrew Dice Clay and Eddie Murphy, and in Clay's case it was for jokes pertaining to sexism and not racism, and Eddie it was simply for his vulgar language. As Miles pointed out, in comedy, anything goes. Nick DiPaulo, Jim Norton, and the legendary Don Rickles are three of the funniest comedians in comedy and they make Black jokes all the time, and it's accepted just as when Chris Rock makes White jokes, because they're all funny, so if anyone can please give me an example of a white comedian being crucified for making black jokes please do so, otherwise please get your facts straight, thanks

It must be pretty fun being Chris rock.

Every time I see him in a film he seems to spend the vast majority of it being amazed by the fact that he is black.

I'm guessing he must have been this way since birth... must never be a dull moment for him.

Put it this way - how many top white comedians make black jokes?
Do you think there's possibly a reason for that? It's not like there isn't a wealth of material and opportunities for them to do so.... proven by the fact that the majority of black comedians make up the majority of their work from just that.

I have no problem with race jokes at all, don't care who makes them as they are they are in good humour... Love Richard Pryor, my favourite comedian (because he also talks about other things... race/sex jokes are so easy... pryor will make you laugh talking about drowning/jogging/a monkey) but don't think for a second that there isn't a double standard on who can perform them.

You'll never hear a top white comedian getting ripped for a race joke because the seldom do them, their material isn't made up from it other wise they would not have made it big. There's plenty of low time comedians who try and pull it off but can't get a way with it

Actually put it this way, how many black comedians have reached the Rock/Murphy/Prior iconic type status? Only a handful. Of the countless other black comedians who beat the race horse to death, almost none of them reach any type of stardom, because people are bored to death with the race topic, unless, as has been stated, they are FUNNY. You answered your own question, there's plenty of people who try to pull it off but can't get away with it. The comedians I mentioned, along with your favorite Pryor, made it to the top because of one reason above all else; they're funny.

Murphy and Pryor both have much more than race jokes... that's why they are basically legends... Chris Rock hasn't done too bad but isn't on eithers level if we're honest.
He may be relevant to a lot of young people and the black community him but he's not what you would call a house hold name. If I told my dad Murphy was doing acts again he'd probably get a ticket... if I said Chris Rock was in town he'd ask who the fuck he was.

Like you said Murphy and Pryor were big draws because they could connect with a wide audience on all sorts of levels... not because they told funny race jokes. I never said that they got big because the told a lot of race jokes.

That doesn't change the fact that they can get away with saying things that somebody like Robin Williams etc couldn't.

The proof is right there, race dominates a lot of black comedy, why doesn't it with white? Murphy etc will talk about race (black and white) because it's funny and he won't get chastised for it. Can you think of a reason why top white comedians don't, if they have the potential to say something funny about a subject that a lot of people are going to get then they're not just going to leave it out of their material.

That's all very true, but ask yourself this, how many big name comedians of ANY race have emerged the past 10 years? Not many. You know why? Because comedy is alot like the dunk contest, everything has already been done. If I asked you, or anyone to name their top 10 comics of all time, at least 9 would be from 15 years ago or earlier. All race jokes have been done, and the only way to make them funny is to tell them in a new observant light, which few can do. And let's not forget, Robin Williams didn't harp on race because he didn't have to, just as Bill Cosby didn't have to harp on race. He dealt with family issues that all could relate to, another reason the Cosby Show was as successful as it was. And lastly, Chris Rock is not as iconic as Pryor or Murphy, but to say he's not a household name is way off. You don't get asked to host the Oscars if your not a household name.

ps-as I stated before, white comedians will joke about race if they have something funny to say about it, a good comedian knows nothing is off limits, so if they refuse to put something in their act for fear of offending someone they're a p@ssy, and I don't think their are too many top white comics who are afraid of anything.

You didn't tell me any... I've just had to back track through the whole entire thread to find you listing people back before I'd even started posting in it. I replied to the first post and went from my reply.

Not heard those guys doing it but I'll take your word for it. It's still true that it is prominent in almost all black stand up whilst I've heard little to none of it from other comedians but if these guys do do it as much as black comedians do to as big an audience then I guess there is no double standard.

Still don't know why it's such dominent topic in black stand up but maybe you could shed some light on that also?
I'm getting the feeling you know a few more comedians than I do...

edit: Oh and for the record I hope I don't come off as being bothered about race jokes - they're funny. these are just the conclusions I've came to as to why it is so much more common in black comedy

So you like comedians when they are being racists towards black people but you feel the need to complain on a boxing forum when a black man makes a joke about a white man?

You've said it yourself......thats just double standards!!!
