Reading Newspaper Articles via Google News

A friend of mine just showed me a nifty feature of Google, called Google News. I can look through many newspapers although mostly the NY Times, but it give me a wide range of information on fighters as well as their boxing matches.

You can see for yourself here: Google News Archive
-I set the date for 1870-1970, and you can change that around depending on what you're searching for. It's set for "free articles only", so if you want to find any articles that require payola, then you're welcome to change the settings as you see fit. Check it out, there are a lot of interesting articles out there.

As for another online newspaper resource, you might want to consider this: Chronicling America. It has newspapers from 1900-1910 some of which have excellent boxing coverage for the time.

Cinderella Man: James J. Braddock, Max Baer and the Greatest Upset in Boxing History - Audiobook

This was a very interesting look into the life of James Braddock, emphasizing his spectacular accomplishment of seizing the heavyweight crown from Max Baer. It's information is right on, captivating and much more in depth than the partial story displayed in the movie. It's a good read, and in this case a pleasure to listen to. Enjoy this audiobook.

    Anyong pomilov,

I posted a lot of the books/articles on Rapidshare.com which automatically deletes files if no one downloads them within 30 days.

If there is a particular book/article that you are interested let me know which one, and I'll see if I can find it on my computer. I might not still have all of the files that I uploaded, but I'll do the best that I can to help you.

    All the best

Here's an interesting article about Ezzard Charles from Ring magazine (January 1951).

You might need to zoom in in order to read the text. In Firefox/IE you'd press "Ctrl +" to zoom in, and "Ctrl -" to zoom out.

Circus: Dispatches from the World of Boxing

Published together for the first time, this anthology of essays on boxing covers the sport in all its forms and at its many levels. Written in bestselling author Katherine Dunn’s characteristic vernacular, these pieces range from portraits of legendary fighters such as Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran, Marvin Hagler, and Mike Tyson to the unsung stories of trainers, amateurs, promoters, cutmen, and a pair of pugilistic priests. Spanning 30 years and including all who make up the vibrant boxing world, this compilation—from one of the most original voices in American sports literature—finely elevates the sport and communicates its beauty, passion, and character.

    The Guarantor
    by Jay Waitkus

It's been a while since I added any stories onto here. So here's a not too shabby short story about a boxing manager who promises his fighter that he'll win his next bout. What the manager does parallels his nonfiction counterparts in which to the extent that one may go in order to secure victory. It's only a few pages long, but it's worth the couple of minutes that it takes to read it.
