Ivan Calderon Wants Brian Viloria After Mayol Bout

Junior flyweight champ Ivan Calderon is happy to finally end the longest inactivity of his career. He returns on June 13 at New York's Madison Square Garden on the undercard to Cotto-Clottey. He faces Filipino fighter Rodel Mayol. Calderon has not fought since last August's rematch with Hugo Cazares. Calderon suffered a bad cut in the fight, which required 43 stitches to close and kept him out of the ring for a while.

Calderon plans to take the fight to Mayol in the early rounds. He doesn't want to fall behind in case his cut opens up.

"There was a moment of frustration because I had a date (May 23), I started to train hard, but Cesar Canchila lost. Then it changed to June 6, but without knowing the opponent, my motivation dropped, but knowing at last there is a opponent, and officially a date, my motivation returns. What I hope happens now is there is nothing like an injury or something like that," Calderon told El Nuevo Dia .

"It was the longest downtime in my career and the most frustrating period as the clock runs against me. I am already 34 years old. I'm fine and I don't have any problems. I can not fight with fear of opening a wound but, if anything, I'm going to go out and win the early rounds to take the advantage on the cards if something happen."

Calderon for his next fight will be his first in the famous arena and New York is "a dream come true."

He would like to face IBF champion Brian Viloria in a unification bout.

"After this fight, we can have a great fight against Brian Viloria, which can also be for good money. Moreover, we have history as I fought him three times in the amateurs and he won two of them," Calderon said.

Wow... didn't realize Ivan's 34 already. Maybe not old for heavyweights, but a little long in the tooth for the little guys. I hope Ivan squeezes in a couple more fights against top opposition before he decides to hang it up.

RP vs. PR is heating up...

"Campeon vs. Campeon" JuanMa defeated Peñalosa...

    Calderon vs. Mayol coming up...

On August 22, another "Campeon vs. Campeon" Nonito Donaire vs. Jose "Carita" Lopez ...

And if Morel upsets Montiel, there's a possibility of Morel vs. Peñalosa at bantamweight...

    .
i highly doubt Morel will beat Montiel though, he honestly has looked like crap since he lost his 0, Martin Castillo put quite a whooping on him, and i doubt that the jail time did him much good at least in regards to his career, wouldn't mind seeing Viloria Vs. Calderon though either

    That's a big if ...

Viloria vs. Calderon is very interesting... It's a unification fight... And they met 3 times before in the amateurs with Viloria having 2 wins over Calderon...

His lack of punching power is kind of an equalizer for opponents... but I think Ivan's still slick enough to outbox most potential opponents out there. I think a year or two more at most is what Ivan has left.

I agree with Titofan that even at 34 Calderon is still more than capable than dealing most of the opposition around 105 & 108, apart from maybe Gonzalez... I think he needs to fight Viloria next after Mayol, then maybe Gonzalez, Garcia or Sithsamerchai. I'd then love to see him step up to 112 & take that 0 from Narvaez!

Luis Concepcion? The Panamainian would be a good 1st fight at 112 for Calderon, he blew away Arambulet & dominated Esquer...

    My ideal future for Calderon:

    School Viloria
    Go to war with Gonzalez
    Take Narvaez' 0
