Floyd's aresenal of punches.

I'm surprised no one ever brings this up, as I find it very intriguing when watching PBF fight..

I'm not dogging Floyd at all here, he is my favorite fighter and i am constantly in AWE of his skills..

Now, i understand he is fast as hell, but do you think Freddie Roach (assuming he eventually fights Pacquiao) would be able to come up with a plan to deal with Mayweathers arsenal of punches, which really only consists of maybe 5 or 6 different punches.

-He barely uses his jab, even though he has a GREAT jab.. but that would be one.

-His left hook is probably one of the most common punches he throws.. Either off of the back foot while backing up, or the leaping-leading left hook.

-When he has his opponent coming toward him, he often crouches down and leaps in with a strong straight right, which i think is probably his most powerful punch.

-He throws the right/left straight hand to the pit of the stomach often, to both mix up his punches and to frustrate his opponent (besides the obvious facts of a body punch)

-He sometimes throws the right uppercut while moving backwards almost as a counter punch.


With those 4 or so punches aside, he doesn't throw many other punches besides when he is fighting on the inside, he will mix it up.. and it's safe to say that if you have Floyd throwing combinations at you, then you're already in a lot of trouble, BUT do you think that Roach, as one of the top trainers, or even Marquez as a skilled and intelligent fighter will have a type of game plan to specifically prepare for Floyd's attack?

As i said, i'm not dogging on him at all, and i know that he adapts in the ring and even if certain punches are taken from him that he will find a way to land other shots, AND that they are quick as hell so even if you know it's coming you may not be able to slip or block them.. But i just find it amazing that he really sticks to his guns and finds openings for what seems to be a simple arsenal of punches that he can constantly land..

With all of the Floyd hate, i'm surprised no one has ever really hated on him for this.. I could think of about 10 posters who would say "Floyd only has 5 punches he throws, Marquez/Pacquiao will figure him out"..

That's what i meant w/ the bold one i just highlighted.. just forgot to throw lead in there.. but yep thats his big punch i think..

I doubt he'll be figured out. He can be beat but not by way of outthinking him. PBF is a very intelligent fighter. But one other thing he has going for him is the same as RJJ. Even if you see something that you think should be exploited he is so freaking athletic that he is in there and out before you can capitalize. RJJ had so many flaws that it seemed a miracle he wasn't beaten up in his prime. But what it really is, for example, is that he was so gifted athletically that even when he carried his left hand to his shorts you still couldn't get your right hand to land. Thats why PBF and RJJ are able to lead out with their power punches, left hooks and overhand rights, so often and get away with it because of their freakish athleticism. So even if you were to outthink a guy like PBF you still have to get past his athleticism. So basically, the best plan opponents see is to just straight out rush, crowd, and smother him to take away time to think and react and maybe even land that lucky shot.

He's got them all, its just a question of using them. He's got the jab to the head and the body, hook to the head and the body, uppercuts with both hands.

He just doesn't use them much anymore because he's been fighting better fighters, guys he's not as likely to open up on. Just look at the Gatti fight he was even throwing right hooks to the body, he was throwing everything, the Chavez fight he used uppercuts a lot. He just doesn't open up as much anymore.
