I'm with ya on Afghanistan, Spicoli. I think the unified forces largely missed the boat on that now. I know a lot of Canadians are whining about being there, but I think we needed to be there from the get-go. Could have cut the head off that extremist body before it began growing arms all over the place.

Then again, I don't have anyone I know in Afghanistan, or have personally lost people as other Canadians in that fight, so I suppose it is subjective.

I'm not a fan of made up wars either. The war in Iraq was based upon lies and the media being fed a series of mistruths. Afghanistan had more justification but there war there appears to have been a long drawn out disaster. A lot of money has been spent on these wars and it's money the American people just don't have. Quite disgusting really.

Yeah, the BNP are a bit more than right of centre

I'm like most people. Liberal on some shit, conservative on others. Probably fairly left-wing, although I voted for the leftylee option.

On Afghanistan, the problems with rising extremism have largely come about through the sheer short-sightedness exhibited by those in charge when they first went in. Rather than getting a united front, they simply paid off the main warlords onto their side, without thinking about the consequences down the road when they actually wanted to establish a Government. Plus Karzai is one corrupt motherfucker, basically a Tony Montana in charge of a city, funnelling out enormous amounts of heroin.

The war had justification & the Taleban had to go, they were about as loathsome a group as there's been on this planet, but the tactics employed by the Allies have turned a lot of people in favour of the Taleban, who previously couldn't stand the bastards.

I was left wing during college days. It was the norm in the university I attended. In terms of armed struggle, I guess I'm in between. I don't support the left nor the right wing.

In terms of being critical with what the administration is doing, I'm a full bloodied leftist. I can't stand politicians, red tape, bureaucracy, and corruption. I'm vocal with my opposition against the current administration in the Philippines but I won't go to armed struggle as some of my classmates and acquaintances had already done.

None of those things are limited to right-wing politicians unfortunately. In fact, as I'm sure Lyle will not hesitate to tell you, often times left-wing governments involve more bureaucracy than right-wing ones because they have many more government-run social programs etc.

Not if you're in the Philippines.

I didn't put an answer, because like most honest people I have views of both sides of the fence depending on the issue. I can't agree fully with the left because it is the party of bigger national government how many czar's does a Federalist Republic need? I can't fully agree with the right, because their foreign policy is horrible and their ridiculous deregulation tactics lead to rampant corporatism. Both lead to market failures if left to run for too long regardless of what either side tells you.

My view on government (and I strongly believe this) is that we need to maintain a pendulum effect so neither side can be allowed to govern to result in these failures.

On personal liberties I feel strongly support Gay Marriage although I believe it should be decided on a state to state basis, pro-choice (studies show it lowers violent crime), legalization of marajuana. My leftist views on personal liberty are what I am primarily judged by. I do classify myself as a liberal, but in the same way the founding fathers were. On the right I strongly support protection of the 2nd amendment (Right to bear arms), I also think that states rights are far overlooked and the Federal Government is able to collect more power because state governments are neglected by a majority of citizens.

For every story told that divides us, I believe there are a thousand untold that unite us.

I'm mostly left wing although some of the far left infuriates me.

On social matters I'm as liberal, if that's the word, as possible. Don't have any issue with gay marriage, etc. I try to be pragmatic so to speak in foreign policy stuff, I'm not a pacifist but there are no need for we're kind of bored wars. You can object to Iraq on any number of levels, forget the moral issue (not saying you should necessarily) if you just look at it with a cold blooded view of does this help or hurt the national interest it doesn't pass the test. The world would have been better off without the creation of Israel just in terms of security IMO but I don't see anything good coming out of just demonizing one side and saying the others are the be all, end all. Its done, Israel's there, not going away, hammer something out, although I don't see any reason for optimism.

Economically I think I'm kind of middle of the road which probably makes me a lefty in America. I'm for universal health care, some sort of fair tax system although you can't mention redistribution here, but I'm not really a protectionist or anything.

I don't have any issue with immigration and don't care about white people becoming a minority here or losing our "national culture" whatever that is. I can't say I've given too much thought about whether I'm against a strong centralized gov't, I guess I would say that I'm not.

I've decided to be against the death penalty mainly just because of the dumb fuckism and irresponsibility of people involved in the process. Some people probably deserve killing but its too messed up a system. Disturbed by abortion, I guess I'm pro-choice though.

I have a lot of the same views really.

In terms of Israel I accept that it is now there, but the continual building of settlements and the blind eye the world shows to this is unnaceptable. Imagine if the U.S. wanted to build a new U.S. city and just plant it on Canadian soil and use the U.S. military to defend it. Nobody would think that okay, and yet Israel has been doing this for years now. This is where I an see pressure and perhaps force being neccessary from the International community.

In terms of protectionism I do wish the U.S. would wise up some more. Korea imports next to nothing from the states and yet is able to export huge amounts of cars and electronic products. Even the i-phone has been kept off the market until Korean companies could develop something more along those lines. Now the market has been saturated with Korean crap they are apparently letting the i-phone in. It will no doubt flop. I don't believe in protectionism, but the U.S. should definitely do something to control massive trade imbalances. At least start building things people want and when they do make sure other markets are as willing to take in as they are to export where they already make bundles of cash freely. The trade balance with China must be insane.

They tried that in Germany about 80 years ago. I don't want to give away the ending, but it didn't go well for them.

Edit: That wasn't directed at you Al.

I'm all for revolution, however I'm pretty sure the movements we seek would be incompatible with one another.
