I've honestly been surprised by how poor the coverage on this Pac-Mayweather fight is all across the board and I don't think many are shooting straight in regards to it, Rafael and Hauser included. Even Al Bernstein, whom I think is as on-point as there is, seems to have a jaded view of the whole situation in my opinion.

I wouldn't say that boxing journalism is being soiled by these guys though. My favorite writer of all time is Jack Fiske, and he had as much personal opinion in his articles as anyone else (his final column was him lamenting about many things including fighters who wear the same color trunks and fighters with tattoos ) today and I actually don't mind that from established writers who have been pre-screened to actually deserve the shout-space. What I don't like is all the crazy ass internet reporters and boxing industry rejects like Michael Marley who do nothing but stir the pot, thus getting internet boards like this exploding with topics on their drivel. That's what sad but I'm not sure how much the quality has dropped so much the quantity. The internet gives people a venue other then calling in to an AM radio station.

Rafael really didn't follow boxing until his 20's? That's odd.

Not that odd according to this site.

I think CFH has only been a fan a couple of years (since Oscar-Floyd or something?). Bilbo came to this site claiming fighters under 160lb weren't worth watching. A good few Brits started watching with Hatton-Kostya

No of course not people pick up stuff at different times, but for someone who has a definite perceived arrogance about him and speaks on many things as the authority, it is a bit odd.

It's true that I'm a relatively recent fan. I started getting into boxing in around 2005. I really liked the Winky - Trinidad fight, that was the fight boxing match that really captured my attention for some reason. That was the first fight that really got me into the sport. I realized it wasn't all about brute strength and concussive knockouts and that there was a true art about the game. To be honest, around the same time I also really enjoyed the Contender show (go ahead, laugh away). Ever since then I've been a pretty hardcore fan, but it's only been 4/5 years for me.

I joined Saddo's in 2006 and basically lurked for a year because I didn't know fuck all about the sport really, I think I probably had like 50 posts in my first year here. Even after that I only really posted sporadically. It took me almost as long to go from 1-1,000 posts than it did to got from 1,000-10,000. I only really started posting on here a lot after my mom died in mid-2007 because it: a) gave me an anonymous venue to talk about what had happened; and b) because it was a place where I could kind of escape what was happening in my life.

And that ends today's segment of "Get to Know a MOD Better"

Around the time of that Contender show was just about as busy as I can remember it on here. That definitely got boxing fans out of the woodwork.

I think it did. Lots of people like to piss all over it, and it was incredibly cheesy and subjective with it's music and editing. However, it was successful, albeit temporarily, at bringing boxing into the mainstream. It was sensationalized, romanticized, and horribly cliched, but it was also able to briefly capture peoples attention. I know of a few people who were turned on to boxing or had their interest rekindled because of it. It certainly helped increase my interest in the sport.

If The Contender was more like The Ultimate Fighter then it would still be a hit right now.

They needed to pair with ESPN to have a Fight Night on like a Wednesday or something and just do an entire card and it in turn would have given ESPN the chance to boost ratings on Friday Night Fights and promote other events.

TUF has bad fights but it has FULL fights and no crappy edited fights which just makes everyone think "It's fixed"
