Default Barry Mcguigan thinks Valero should not fight agian..

Why Edwin Valero must quit ring for the sake of boxing - mirror.co.uk

What do you reckon?? If he has passed the relevant tests and he knows what the dangers are and he is aware of what could happen and he is happy to do it, I think it should be his choice.

I can see where Mcguigan is coming from, deaths can happen in boxing easily as it is without risking someone who has known brain injuries. If though he can be licensed in other parts of the U.S. other than Texas for example Nevada or New York and his injuries can be proven to have fully recovered through the correct scans then I don't see the problem.

I don't know much about Valero's condition but it must be quite serious if he can't get a license anywhere but Texas. Is his damage still evident, or are the authorities just worried about what COULD happen? Damage can happen to anyone in a fight and if Valero's fully recovered then he has as much right as anyone to fight.

Mcguigan is a fukking idiot. A selfish one at that. Valero ain't no 17, 18 year kid who doesn't know any better. He's a 28 year old man who is very well aware of what he's gotten himself into. Who the fukk is Mcguigan to try and take Valero's career away before it's time? To put pressure on Valero by saying it's for the sake of Boxing is fukked up. And wrong. Boxing is a brutal sport. Valero isn't any more at risk than any other fighter. He can't get a US license cuz everybody is just looking out for themselves. Nobody wants the finger pointed at them if something were to happen to him. Doesn't mean he's in any more danger than normal.

Mcguigan needs to watch the Vincente Mosquera fight. A fight in which Valero took his share of punches without falling and dying. It don't need to be Pacquiao or Mayweather to test him. Mosquera tested him just fine

I dont know, something happened 6 months ago here in Guernsey thats a similar type of thing.

A woman with epilepsy had just passed a load of tests to say she was fit to drive, the next day she had a fit and jammed her foot on the throttle and smashed a young bloke on a motor scooter while he was in a queue of traffic, the man died instantly, the woman was fine.

She had epilepsy but passed the relevant tests, Valero has passed tests to fight but it might not be long before he has an injury.

How the hell is that even similar?? The woman is putting other people at risk not only herself she is accountable for everyone around her when she drives, Valero like VD said is a grown man if he has passed the tests but still knows the risks and he is happy with that imo it's up to him. He has only himself to answer to.

At the end of the day it's not up to Barry Mcguigan, I agree - it's not his health.

But it is a valid point - I doubt that the Scooter/Car industry has came under much fire because of that colision, think the point he was making was more about the reliability of such complex tests/conditions.

Can't say I agree with Barry Mcguigan but I do get were he is shooting from... boxing isn't exactly enjoying the popularity it once was (does seem to be growing again mind...) a fatality isn't really what it needs right now... whether it's right or not, or more risky than other sports doesn't matter... reactionary types always jump on it at any chance they can.

I do wonder why, if he is really bothered - does he have to say this publicly? If he was genuinley concerned why not say so privately? This seems like he's wanting to help his image to help his promotions perhaps?

    For fucks sakes

The woman passed the tests required to drive but knew she has eplilepsy, Valero has passed the tests to fight but knows he has a brain injury, something could happen to him as he ups the class of opponent.

Well yes & no. The physical consequences would only hurt Valero. But could you imagine the psychological consequences his opponent would suffer if he seriously hurts or (God forbid) kills Valero because of this? Everyone wants to win but nobody wants to pay that price.

It is a very complex subject though.

everyone who throws and takes a punch knows this. No one goes in expecting it to happen and the chances are very slim that it ever will.

I think the writer is speaking to all boxing fans and doctors/commisioners/licensers et al. None of us have the right to restrict Valeros right to box, but the people in power listen to the public for moral guidance.

I'll be the first to say I would not grant him a boxing licence if it were up to me. No way in hell I am playing God. Look at HolmCall's recent post about upsets, and there's another scenario I wouldn't go for, professionals beating the tar out of guys who've never laced gloves up in Thailand.

Honestly people put yourselves in the shoes of the man granting. Do you think you could do it?

Lastly, of COURSE it would have a huge impact on boxing if Valero died in the ring. The scrutiny would go well past all this PED stuff. I really like watching this guy fight, and at the end of the day it's good that it's up to him. I'm just glad he trains hard, looks good and fights to win.

    Fair Do's

I just put that down to his little Irish accent.. '' For the sake of Boxing!''... Like when i say ''For Christ sake''!

I don't literally mean ''For the betterment of the memory of Jesus, our Lord & Saviour''

I've never seen a single one of his articles where McGuigan isn't spouting complete unadulterated bullshit. I don't have the memories of him as a fighter, seeing as I was a toddler when he quit boxing, so aside from being impressed by his old fights, he's always come over as complete knob to me.

Approaching a decade after that incident, If he got punched in the head and died tomorrow. I'd still be looking at the last 6 months to 2 years of his life for lingering health problems. To go back to something that happened 9 years ago looking for a reason aside from him being punched in the head for the last 10 years... is a bit of a stretch. As others have said, he's a grown man and knows the consequences of his actions.

After an incident like that, fighting on could be seen as living your life or tempting fate. Tempting fate can be a dangerous game... but its worth the gamble when you weigh spending the rest of your life living vs. spending the rest of your life wishing because you're afraid to do anything because it could kill you.
They want your @$$ beat because upsets make news. News brings about excitement, excitement brings about ratings. The objective is to bring you up to the tower and tear your @$$ down. And if you don't believe that, you're crazy.
