Not an expert in the subject but helicopters fly a lot lower than planes so it might go under the ash.
Don't think thats the case, I believe the ash is problematic for planes because it will get sucked through the turbines and corrode them or something. Chopper blades I doubt would be affected, there are all kinds of coniditions that Helicopters can fly in which planes can't.
