He had to high: He referred to Monzon as a clean living guy. I remember reading that for years he did most of his training on dance floors in nightclubs and that he regular sparring partners were Argentine actresses.

You bumped up a lot of ineteresting threads today Jim.
Monzon did not look that great, Hagler would have had him.![]()
Do not let success go to your head and do not let failure get to your heart.

Monzon only began training about 3 weeks before a major fight, he smoked like a chimney, drank like a fish and screwed anything that moved, this behaviour also got him shot by his then wife. Yet, he still managed to beat the crap out of every one he fought. Benvenuti was no bum and Monzon made him look second rate, i can't see how anyone can say Monzon didn't look that great when he never lost his last 80 fights and was unbeaten for the last 13 years of his career? Hagler was lucky he retired when he did.

Yeah Monzon has grown on me the last few months. He isn't easy to watch at first because his skills aren't all that easy to see, it's only when I realized he wasn't hardly missing punches that I started to take notice...

That's why they called him 'Shotgun'
Monzon is arguably the greatest Middleweight of all time, the difference in being recoginised as such universally is he only had one major fight in the United States. Hagler has his whole career well documented and is much more well known. Monzon was champ for 7 years, he fought the best out there at the time, his lifestyle was that of a cigar smoking, drinking womaniser and his reputation out of the ring is extremely dubious. Inside the ring he was a beast!
