Default How did Carlos Monzon achieve what he did?

Recently I have being watching fight videos of Carlos Monzon. He seems very good at what he does which is plod forward and throw a 1-2. However he seems to be mostly right hand orientated, has little defence, has slow hand movement and has little variety. While I know little about the opponents I saw him fight (my knowladge doesen't go that far back much), they are clearly world class and the commentators emphaise this. My question is how did he do so well and go undefeated in like 80 fights? This isnt a knock on him I just don't see how some people think he would beat Hagler

Great jab, Granite chin, Good power, Great punching technique, Great stamina for his life style, Good boxing brain. I think that about sums it up.

    Constant sparring in his house.

He was deceptive. He looked slow and upright but just kept coming and stalking. His stamina was incredible and he got stringer as the fight progressed. He is an ATG.

Here he is against Napoles: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQ2B0gXIiRk

    and against Benvenuti: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXivXNvb780

Monzon was a beast, he was tall and that right hand was paralyzing, he had an iron jaw and had he bothered to train properly would have been even more formidable. He smoked, he drank, screwed anything that moved and was shot by his wife in 1973! He virtually didn't start training for a fight until just a few weeks before. I think he would've beaten Hagler down over 12 rounds, they just missed each other by about 18 months. Someone has to make a movie about Monzon, the story is incredible, it doesn't need much embellishment. As a fighter, he is the last guy you wanna see on the other side of the ring.

How did Monzon achieve what he did? In the ring it was because he was smart, skilled and a tough son of a bitch. After boxing he achieved what he did which was throwing his lover over a balcony to her death, he achieved because he was an ASSHOLE!

I would sum it up in 2 words: freak of nature. I can't explain how he could do that after what he did make his body to sustain. He was just a biological enigma, a bit like Lemmy Kilminster or Shane McGowan, you don't know how logically these peoples keep going on but they do.

I really haven't seen much of Monzon but the above fight's. Also if you do notice his record is really jacked up with nobodies to be honest. Must of them too are all in Argentina except the ending fight's of his career. He had all the right tools but a fight Hagler would have been great and I couldn't help but go with Hagler.

Are those applicable to current fighters too?

Say if someone emerged doing incredible and unbelievable things that has never been done before. can we simply say 'He's a freak of nature'?

I've often said Monzon is vastly underestimated. You said in the above comment what a boat load of others have said and I'm certain will continue to say. I don't blame you guys but here's some advice watch closer and watch in detail. When you watch him just analyze the movements he does whether it's step left or step right watch and see what follows. More often then not a double jab or a straight right. Sure he's not PBF lightning fast but he's "Finito" Lopez smart. He's one step ahead of you. He step left you rotate and reach and bam! as you rotate he's already jabbed you.
Just watch the Napoles fight that holmcall put, albeit Napoles a natural Welterweight but Napoles is one of the most naturally gifted boxers to ever grace the sport. So beating someone like him is no easy task.
I have about 23 of Monzon's fight mostly his title fights and a couple of his early/in between fights.
As noted Monzon was Ricardo Mayorga x5 with looks and a "playboy" persona. Stories of having relations in his dressing room prior to fights along with drinking.

As mentioned by THIRDMAN a movie should def. be made and IMO he's the greatest Middleweight of all time.
