i never liked cotto, and dont some knee-jerker come on here and say i'm raacist----i nevber liked cotto, period. is he skilled? yes. is he a good fighter? absolutely IMO. BUT IS HE A GREAT FIGHTER? NO. Not inmy opinion. He's like a ken Norton. really really good, but never making it to greatness. Will Mayorga win? Maybe. He's 37, and thats a 7 year disadvantage against 30 yr old Cotto. Thats a bad spread. But I like Mayorga. I like the quirky ones, the herky jerky ones, the impervious ones, the unorthodox ones. Mayorga by TKO in 3 or less. Shock the world. Gets a shot at Pacquiao, and will get KTFO in 1 round Im sure.

    Cotto beats Mayorga easy.

Cotto will win. He's the less washed up of the two anyway, and even if they were at or around their best I'd take Cotto, he's an all round better fighter.

At there best? I would never pick Cotto to beat Forrest. So at there best, I'll go with Mayorga just because Cotto chin has never been great. But this fight, we don't know what Cotto is bringing. If he gets backed up, and give Mayorga confidence, it's going to be a long night for Cotto.

Sidenote: Arum is the best promoter today. He already mini promoted Pacman vs Mayorga. Already got Margarito vs Cotto 2 lined up. Already told JMM to get away from DLH in order to get a fight against Pacman. The man sees $$$$$.

Mosley was well past his best by the time he fought Cotto also though, and probably only slightly more faded when Mayorga gave him such a tough fight a year or so later. Going by all that I think there's every chane that a PRIME Mayorga would have won a decision against old Shane, but so what. Prime for prime of course Mosley stops him 10 times out of ten. I don't think Cotto would have really had much of a chance against either at their best though honestly, or many other truly elite welterweights of the last 20 years. Couldn't see Miguel beating a prime Oscar, Tito, Quartey, Forrest, Mosley, Floyd, or even Mayorga due to styles. Obviously they would have all been great action fights, I just don't quite rate his chances.

as huge of a Cotto fan that I am, I have to painfully agree with this statement. Cotto just isn't the same fighter he was before his assault.

Pacqauio would whip Mayorga's ass but he sure as hell wouldn't KO him in 1 round.

In any case, I like that 80% of people are going with the safe favorite and picking Cotto in some fashion. Good. I like rooting for the under dogs and Mayorga is my favorite fighter.

The more I've thought about it the more I've begun to see the fight as Mayorga imposing his size, will, and power on Cotto, landing hard shots and stopping Cotto in the middle or later rounds.

Cotto is hittable. More hittable than other fighters Mayorga has faced. Mayorga may overwhelm Cotto early a la the Ricardo Torres fight, but with Mayorga coming out on top. OR Mayorga could get taken out himself with a sharply timed counter by Cotto OR from a great body shot or series of body shots.

It looks to be a competitive fight. People are underestimating Mayorga a lot in this fight. This is his LAST chance to make a living, to set up one more super fight after this. This is his last shot at redemption.

I watched a video on esnewsreporting.com, its Elie Seckbachs site. He was interviewing Doug Fischer from maxboxing and another bloke, they both took the safe pick but Doug contradicted himself by saying Cotto is easy to hit with uppercuts and overhand rights and thats what Mayorga is good at. He also said that he had spoken with Shane Mosley and interestingly he said that Mayorga is quicker than Cotto, I reckon he got that from Shane. What he did say that Shane told him is anyone who fights Mayorga has to watch out for the looping punches that land behind the ear and on top of the head and then those uppercuts. Mayorga hasnt stopped anyone decent for a while but he is so strong that his punches knock his opponents around the ring. He even did that with Oscar and Oscar actually told Shane that Mayorga has very heavey hands.Hes not a Trinidad, clean power type puncher but more a George Foreman bludgeoning type puncher. His punches will deffinitly be knocking Cotto around and I just dont see Cottos having as much of an effect on Mayorga as alot of easily led people here would have you believe.
Also for Mayorga to publcly lift his top to show off his physique, he must be proud of his training he has done. He wasnt as ripped as Manny but never will be at this weight but he was in better looking shape than the Mosley fight.

Well with hard evidence like that we can now be sure Mayorga is going to win !
I'm with you though man. Lets keep our fingers crossed that Mayorga's power and unorthodox style can pull off the upset.

That was a well thought-out post, with quotes from 3rd parties, and no hint of hate for either fighter.
All of which leads me to say......

If Cotto managed to take punches from the best 1 punch ko artist in Mosley why can't he take shots from Mayorga.

I dont think Mosley has ever been regarded as that? Cotto spent most of that fight like a crab, scuttling in his shell sideways along the ropes. Mosley spent the night waiting to land one punch, the over hand right. Look at Wright v Mosley, Mosley didnt have a clue there either against a very basic guard.
