Yeah, that's a pretty horrid image. She appears to have half a crane wedged into her mouth!

I had ceramics and unless you were close up you wouldn't even know they were there. White brackets and white wires aren't too bad and the invisalign is ideal for those with minor imperfections to iron out. I see a lot of my university students going for the same thing these days. The mouth full of metal thing should really be a thing of the past by now, there is just no need for it.

I encourage any adult with dental insecurities to at least think about getting it done because it isn't such a big deal anymore. More are doing it and the technology is improving year by year.

Yeah mine are the same as yours. It's a bit annoying and i haven't got used to them that much yet, but it's not so bad. They don't look really bad or anything.

They are really weird at first and I was very self conscious, but nobody battered an eyelid really. Make sure you get some of that dental wax stuff as you will find you get more mouth ulcers than usual because of rubbing. That's the worst thing really. I was caught on the plane to the UK without any and paid the price, I got a nasty old butchering. Always be prepared.

They gave me dental wax. Only really used it once though. Haven't needed it so much yet. I've got a bit of a lisp at the minute and if i talk too much, my lips get caught on the brackets

So yeah, fun experience. When i tell someone i've got them in, they make me show them. That's annoying because i don't really like my gnashers (hench the brace), but i'm even getting used to that now.

I'm going out with Gate and her mates tomorrow night so i guess i'll be spending the night with my mouth wide open while a crowd of strangers fill their boots. The night better have a happy ending.

At first it can seem really awful as it feels so alien and you think "christ, what have I got myself into?", but a few days pass and it becomes second nature.

How long is your treatment going to be?

6 months for the top set and 2 years for the bottom. No idea why, as the top ones are more crooked. I do keep wondering what i've got myself into, but then i just have to remember that my teeth have bothered me all my life. What's another 6 months when i could end up with a nice smile at the end of it.

I'm not bothered about the bottom brace being on anyway. It doesn't annoy me. Just the top one.

Wow, that's quite unusual. Your top teeth must be pretty okay for it to be only six months. That is a big disparity between the length of treatment for the top and bottom.

Good on you for taking the leap anyway. It's a brave move and many would shy away from getting it done, but 6 months is bugger all really.

Just don't go on a date and eat pizza!

Well the braces are actually called '6 month smile' braces, and people apparently only usually get the top ones done because the braces don't actually alter your bite (not that you really can in an adult anyway). They only fix the aesthetics, which means they will basically just line up.

I think standard braces actually move the teeth in a similar timescale but they need to be left on for 2 years because of the bite. I've no idea why my bottom ones needs two years anyway. Maybe they move slower. I might have a look online actually and find out.
