Default 2003: Mike Tyson v.s James Toney

Okay so lets have some fun.

Take your mind back to 2003. Britney was still pretty hot. Justin Timberlake could dance and West Ham United had just been relegated ().

Lets assume Mike was coming off his 1st round KO win over Clifford Etienne and that James Toney was only just talking about his impending move up to Heavyweight after going the full 12 with Vassiliy Jirov.

Lets imagine that Mike Tyson never waited over a year for a fight and that he never signed to fight Danny Williams and that James Toney never signed to fight Evander Holyfield for his first fight at Heavyweight and that these two got it on in a sensational match-up.... Who would you think would of won that at the time.

As in, what would you of thought back in 2003.

Would you of picked James Toney to humiliate Mike with a virtuoso clinique?
Would you of Picked Mike Tyson to bit a chunk outta James left tit?

Hard to imagine really because all of Tyson's losses came from stoppage and I doubt Toney even at his best could even hurt Tyson. On the other hand I've never seen James Toney truly hurt at any weight and I doubt Tyson would hurt him as his power had faded greatly, Clifford Etienne had a horrible chin.

I think Toney wins a UD, Tyson's stamina sucked and he threw 1 punch at a time, a punch that was usually wide and looping perfect for Toney to roll and counter.

I don't think Tyson was close to being a legit contender in 03...he just had a hell of a chin is all. Any of the top contenders then would have handled him...I think Chris Byrd would take him and Ruiz may have had a shot at him, Holyfield could still beat him.

Toney wins, no doubt about it. I can picture him frustrating the mental midget tyson to a point where he'd be trying to bite Toney's titties off..

Tyson would be the one looking " primitive " against a master like Toney..

    Haha, made me laugh!

I think Tyson would be very dangerous early on, but if Toney was willing to play it safe to weather the early storm, I think he would have outworked Tyson to take a decision. Tyson had the power to hurt Toney, but like Lyle alluded to Tyson had slowed and had become a little one dimensional towards the end. You would think Toney would have the smarts to deal with it.

An old Tyson was basically a 4 round fighter and Toney only ever got stronger as the fight wore on.

    Toney clear UD.

I remember after watching Toney stop Holyfield thinking the unthinkable, that Toney could probably beat that 2003 version of Tyson. James had the conditioning, experience and skills to not get intimidated and beat that Tyson, who was hollow and could not fight after 4 rounds. James would have taken the onslaught early and stopped Tyson in 6-8 rounds. James was never that good again at heavyweight, he had his moments and beat lesser fighters for greater rewards but that was his best performance at the weight ever.

He looked pretty decent doing a number on John Ruiz face with all those 'counter right hands'.

Master, what would you of thought BEFORE Toney fought Holyfield?

Before the Holyfield fight I would have thought Tyson would have won and would have told anyone that thought James would win were being stupid. However we saw later that Tyson was really very very poor and in fact James would have won the fight if they fought.

Sadly, in hindsight Tyson was so far gone, and purely fighting for a paycheck in 03 that James Toney would have probably schooled him and embarassed him.

Still, if you had asked me in 03 who would have won, I would have had to say Mike Tyson.

    Now, I know better.
